What is an apparel manager?

Apparel Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the daily operations of clothing retail stores or departments. Their main duties include managing staff, monitoring inventory, ensuring high levels of customer service, and implementing merchandising strategies to boost sales. They also analyze sales trends, coordinate with suppliers, and ensure the store meets visual and operational standards. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills are essential for this role. Apparel Managers play a key role in achieving sales targets and maintaining a positive shopping environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apparel manager?

To thrive as an Apparel Manager, you need a solid background in retail management, merchandising, inventory control, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Key responsibilities

Job description

Thomas Printworks is a third-generation, family-owned print and marketing fulfillment company founded in 1956. We help franchise systems, multi-location brands, and enterprise clients manage everything from commercial print to branded environments to marketing supply chain fulfillment through our Visualogistix platform. We are not a broker. We produce, source, and fulfill in-house, which means our team owns the process from the first client conversation through delivery.

About the Role

We are hiring a manager to lead our promotional products and apparel team. This team supports our sales organization by sourcing, pricing, and ordering promo and apparel items for clients across our franchise and enterprise accounts.

This is a working manager role. You will lead the team and improve how it runs, and you will also stay hands-on with the work itself. Some weeks, that means coaching a team member through a tough sourcing problem. Other weeks, it means sitting in on a client call to help brainstorm product ideas yourself. We need someone who can do both without treating either one as beneath them.

What You Will Do

Team leadership

  • Manage the day-to-day workflow of the promo and apparel team, including workload distribution, quality control, and deadlines
  • Hire, train, and develop team members as the team grows
  • Coach the team on ideation itself, teaching them how to move from a client's vague ask to a concrete, sellable set of product concepts
  • Set clear standards for turnaround time, pricing accuracy, and client responsiveness, and hold the team to them
  • Identify process gaps and fix them, rather than working around them repeatedly

Working manager responsibilities

  • Personally handle sourcing, pricing, and ordering for key accounts or complex requests
  • Lead ideation sessions with sales reps and clients to develop promo and apparel concepts that fit a brand, a budget, and a timeline
  • Stay current on vendor catalogs, new product categories, decoration methods, and industry trends so you can bring ideas to the table, not just execute on someone else's
  • Step in on escalations when a client issue or vendor problem needs a senior hand

Cross-functional support

  • Act as the primary point of contact for the sales team on all things promo and apparel
  • Partner with sales leadership and the Houston Plant Manager to understand upcoming client needs and staff the team accordingly
  • Work with vendors and suppliers to negotiate pricing, resolve issues, and evaluate new sourcing partners
  • Support Visualogistix-related promo and apparel programs for franchise and multi-location clients

What You Bring

  • 3+ years of experience in promotional products, apparel, or a related sourcing/merchandising field
  • 2+ years of people management experience, ideally leading a team that has both service and production demands
  • Working knowledge of promo and apparel sourcing, decoration methods (screen print, embroidery, DTG, etc.), pricing structures, and vendor networks
  • A track record of staying hands-on as a manager rather than only directing from a distance
  • Strong client-facing skills; comfortable presenting ideas directly to sales reps and clients
  • Organized enough to manage many concurrent orders and deadlines without dropping details
  • Experience with promo/apparel industry tools or platforms (distributor software, supplier portals) is a plus

What Success Looks Like in the First 6 Months

  • The team's turnaround times and order accuracy are stable or improved
  • You have personally run ideation on at least a handful of key accounts, and sales reps trust you as a resource
  • You have identified and started fixing at least one process gap in how the team sources, prices, or orders
  • Sales leadership sees you as a partner who can be looped in early on complex client requests, not just a fulfillment function

Thomas Printworks offers a competitive compensation package based on education and experience plus excellent benefits that include the following:

  • Comprehensive health benefits package
  • Work/Life balance and wellness initiatives
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Paid Time Off
  • Employee Discounts
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Training

Our Values: To be an organization committed to continuous growth, profitability, and values; where our customers recommend us, our employees treasure us, and our peers admire us.

Thomas Printworks is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employee applicant background checks and drug screening are required. We invite you to check out our website at www.thomasprintworks.com to learn more about our company.
