What is an app store optimization?

An App Store Optimization (ASO) job focuses on improving the visibility and ranking of mobile apps in app stores like the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. ASO specialists analyze keywords, optimize app titles and descriptions, enhance visual assets, and track performance metrics to increase app downloads. They also conduct competitor research and A/B testing to refine strategies. The goal is to maximize organic traffic and improve conversion rates, ultimately driving user acquisition and revenue growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in app store optimization?

To thrive in App Store Optimization (ASO), you need a strong understanding of mobile marketing, keyword research, analytics, and user acquisition strategies, often supported by experience with app marketplaces. Familiarity with ASO tools such as App Annie, Sensor Tower, or Mobile Action, along with knowledge of A/B testing and analytics platforms, is essential. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you stand out in collaborating with cross-functional teams and interpreting data-driven results. These abilities are crucial for maximizing app visibility, downloads, and user engagement in a highly competitive landscape.

What are some typical challenges someone might face in an app store optimization role?

Professionals in App Store Optimization often face challenges such as staying up-to-date with evolving app store algorithms, responding quickly to changes in user behavior, and balancing creativity with data-driven decision-making. You'll need to regularly test and refine keywords, visuals, and descriptions to maintain or improve app ranking, which can be time-consuming and requires ongoing analysis. Additionally, coordinating with product, marketing, and design teams to align ASO strategies across campaigns is common. Adapting rapidly and proactively identifying new opportunities will help you stay ahead in this dynamic role.

Does app store optimization work?

App Store Optimization (ASO) is an effective strategy for increasing an app's visibility and downloads in app stores. It involves optimizing app titles, keywords, and descriptions, and is a key skill for ASO specialists to improve app ranking and user acquisition.

Is app store optimization legal?

App Store Optimization (ASO) is a legal practice that involves improving app visibility and ranking through ethical techniques such as keyword optimization, quality app descriptions, and user engagement strategies. Key responsibilities

  • Own the architecture, quality, and direction of the React Native mobile application.

  • Hold the technical bar through code review, standards, and mentoring, and run the release process end-to-end.

  • Ship features from architecture through deployment, and contribute across the stack including React web and backend services.

Job description

Reflex is building the operating system for flexible retail labor. We help retailers fill shifts faster while giving workers more flexibility and better opportunities. Operating across 25+ states and supporting thousands of W2 associates, we’re creating the infrastructure layer that powers the future of hourly work.

We’re a fast-moving, mission-driven team tackling complex problems across marketplace dynamics, scheduling, compliance, payments, and workforce operations. Our ambition is simple: build the category-defining platform for flexible labor.

The Role

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to become the primary owner of our mobile application, the core experience used by thousands of workers every day. You'll inherit a mature, production React Native codebase and take responsibility for its architecture, quality, and direction.

This is a high-ownership role. You won't be the only person touching mobile, but you'll be the one setting the standard: defining best practices and raising the bar in code review. You'll work across the stack where it helps you ship, partnering closely with product, design, and backend.

If you like owning a product end-to-end, care about craft, and want your fingerprints on how a team builds (not just what it ships), this is for you.

What You’ll Do
  • Own the architecture, quality, and direction of our React Native apps.
  • Hold the technical bar for mobile through code review, standards, and mentoring.
  • Run the release process end-to-end, including App Store and Play Store listings.
  • Turn ambiguous product problems into intuitive, high-quality experiences alongside product and design.
  • Ship features from architecture through deployment and iteration.
  • Drive improvements in performance, reliability, observability, and developer experience.
  • Contribute across the stack, including React web and backend services.
  • 5+ years building and shipping production software.
  • Deep React Native expertise, including apps you've taken to scale in production.
  • Strong command of React and TypeScript.
  • A track record of raising the bar on a team: setting standards, reviewing code, mentoring engineers.
  • Comfort working across the full stack and designing/consuming APIs.
  • Strong product instincts and a bias toward shipping.
  • A clear communicator who collaborates well and thrives in startup ambiguity.
Bonus Points
  • Experience with marketplace, logistics, scheduling, or consumer products.
  • Experience with mobile performance optimization and observability.
  • Familiarity with Django, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, or AWS.
  • Startup experience and a track record of owning products from zero to one.
Why Reflex?
  • Real ownership: you'll own the mobile surface outright, not a slice of it.
  • Early-stage upside: meaningful equity and a seat at the table as we scale.
  • A team worth joining: high-ownership, low-ego, and serious about craft
