Apheresis Technician – Blood Donor Services

As an Apheresis Technician, you will support the safe and efficient collection and processing of blood components through apheresis procedures. You will operate and monitor apheresis equipment, provide direct care and support to donors and patients throughout procedures, maintain accurate documentation, and work closely with nurses, physicians, laboratory professionals, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality care.

A typical day for an Apheresis Technician may include:

· Perform and assist with apheresis procedures for the collection of blood components, including platelets, plasma, and other designated products, in accordance with established policies and procedures.

· Prepare patients and donors for apheresis procedures, including verification of identification, review of required information, assessment of vital signs, and preparation of venous access.

· Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot apheresis collection equipment and related instrumentation to ensure safe and effective procedures.

· Monitor patients and donors throughout apheresis procedures for signs and symptoms of adverse reactions or complications and promptly communicate concerns to nursing staff or physicians.

· Respond appropriately to citrate reactions, hypotension, vasovagal reactions, equipment alarms, and other procedure-related complications according to established protocols.

· Maintain accurate and timely documentation of apheresis procedures, patient and donor information, equipment activities, product collection, and adverse events.

· Ensure proper labeling, handling, storage, and transport of collected blood components and specimens in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.

· Perform equipment setup, disinfection, cleaning, quality checks, calibration support, and routine maintenance as required.

· Follow established procedures for equipment troubleshooting and promptly escalate equipment malfunctions or safety concerns.

· Perform required quality control activities and ensure compliance with applicable FDA, AABB, CLIA, CAP, and organizational standards.

· Maintain competency in apheresis procedures, equipment operation, emergency response, infection prevention, and patient and donor safety practices.

· Collaborate with nurses, physicians, transfusion medicine specialists, laboratory personnel, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to provide coordinated care.

· Assist with patient and donor education by explaining procedures, expected sensations, post-procedure instructions, and safety precautions within the scope of practice.

· Monitor supplies, disposables, reagents, and other apheresis materials to support uninterrupted daily operations.

· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe treatment and collection environment in accordance with infection prevention and environmental safety standards.

· Participate in quality improvement initiatives designed to improve workflow, product quality, patient and donor experience, and operational efficiency.

· Identify and report deviations, adverse events, equipment concerns, and quality issues and participate in appropriate corrective and preventive actions.

· Maintain current knowledge of apheresis procedures, equipment, regulatory requirements, and advances in blood collection and transfusion medicine.

· Support a culture of teamwork, accountability, compassion, customer service, and continuous improvement throughout Blood Donor Services.

To be considered for this Apheresis Technician opportunity, you must:

· Have a high school diploma or equivalent and a BLS Certification

· Certified Clinical Apheresis (CCA) through BONENT, or eligibility to obtain within one year of hire,

· Have At least one year of experience with apheresis, dialysis, transfusion services, phlebotomy, or comparable procedural patient care in a healthcare or hospital setting,

· Have previous experience in apheresis, blood collection, transfusion medicine, laboratory medicine, critical care, dialysis, or another comparable clinical environment preferred.

· Demonstrate the ability to safely operate and monitor specialized apheresis equipment and follow established technical procedures.

· Have strong knowledge of patient and donor identification, specimen and blood component handling, infection prevention, and safety practices.

· Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

· Be able to recognize and respond appropriately to patient or donor reactions and other procedure-related concerns.

· Be comfortable working with electronic medical records, laboratory information systems, and other clinical or computerized systems.

· Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

· Maintain required competencies, certifications, and continuing education applicable to the position and scope of practice.

· Prior experience with apheresis collection systems, blood component collection, or therapeutic apheresis is highly preferred.
