What is Ansys?

Ansys is a widely used engineering simulation software designed to analyze and solve complex engineering problems related to structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, thermal analysis, and electromagnetics. Ansys engineers use this software to model, simulate, and optimize the performance of products and systems in a virtual environment before physical prototypes are made. Their work helps companies reduce development costs, improve product reliability, and accelerate time to market. They often collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to interpret simulation results and recommend design improvements.

What types of projects do engineers typically work on when using Ansys software?

Engineers who use Ansys software are often involved in simulation-driven projects such as finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and electromagnetic field simulations. These projects can range from optimizing the structural integrity of automotive components to improving thermal management in electronics or simulating fluid flow in aerospace designs. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including design, manufacturing, and testing—is common to ensure simulation results align with real-world performance. The work often involves iterating on models, validating results, and communicating findings to stakeholders, making strong communication and analytical skills essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Ansys engineer?

To thrive as an Ansys Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, proficiency in finite element analysis (FEA), and typically a degree in mechanical, aerospace, or related engineering fields. Mastery of Ansys simulation software, relevant CAD tools, and possibly certifications like Ansys Certified Expert are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help professionals interpret simulation results and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate simulations, efficient design processes, and successful project outcomes in industries where precision and innovation are critical.

What is the difference between Ansys vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectAnsysMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in simulation softwareEngineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign and simulation software, engineering labs, R&DManufacturing plants, design offices, R&D departments
Industry UsageProduct design, aerospace, automotive, energyProduct development, manufacturing, systems design

While Ansys focuses on simulation and analysis software used by engineers, Mechanical Engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and develop mechanical systems. Ansys is a tool often used by Mechanical Engineers to perform simulations, making their roles interconnected but distinct. Understanding the differences helps in choosing the right career path or software expertise.

Does Ansys offer remote work options?

Ansys offers remote work options for certain roles, especially those in software development, engineering, and support functions. Availability of remote work depends on the specific position, team needs, and company policies, which may include flexible schedules and virtual collaboration tools.

How much does Ansys pay?

Salaries for Ansys employees vary based on role, experience, and location. Entry-level positions typically start around $60,000 annually, while experienced engineers and specialists can earn over $100,000 per year. Compensation may also include bonuses, stock options, and benefits depending on the position and company policies.

Job Description:

We are seeking a Senior Propulsion Design Engineer to support the development and delivery of propulsion hardware for the X-BAT platform, a next-generation UAV powered by a low-bypass turbofan engine. This role spans the full lifecycle of propulsion system components - from early layout and design through production release, test support, and flight operations.

You will be a key contributor to turning propulsion architecture into manufacturable, testable, and flight-ready hardware across the engine, fuel, oil, and bleed air systems. This role is hands-on, detail-oriented, and highly cross-functional - requiring close collaboration with propulsion REs, technicians, machinists, production, controls, airframe, and flight test teams.

What you will do in this role:
  • Own the design and release of propulsion hardware supporting the engine, fuel, oil, and bleed air systems.
  • Develop and maintain CAD models, drawings, and assemblies using Siemens NX with proper GD&T.
  • Translate propulsion architecture and requirements into hardware that is manufacturable, testable, and robust in flight.
  • Work directly with the machine shop, production, and technicians to support builds, resolve non-conformances, and drive iterative improvements.
  • Support test campaigns by providing hardware design support, instrumentation accommodation, and rapid iteration based on test findings.
  • Apply engineering judgment and analysis (e.g., hand calcs, ANSYS, FEA, GFSSP, REFPROP) to support sizing, load cases, and design validation.
  • Support configuration management, BOM control, and change processes using Teamcenter or equivalent PLM.
  • Participate in design reviews, interface control efforts, and root cause investigations related to propulsion hardware.
Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in aerospace hardware design, preferably supporting propulsion systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD modeling and drawing creation (NX preferred) with sound application of GD&T.
  • Experience working directly with production, technicians, and machine shops to resolve real-world build issues.
  • Understanding of design for manufacturing, including machining limitations, tolerance stack-ups, and assembly workflows.
  • Some hands-on experience developing assembly guidance and supporting hardware builds and test integration.
  • U.S. Citizenship or ability to comply with ITAR requirements.
  • Ability to obtain a S//SAR level security clearance desired.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with jet propulsion systems on UAVs or tactical aircraft.
  • Familiarity with GFSSP, REFPROP, ANSYS, or FEA to support design trade studies and validation.
  • Ability to write Python scripts for design automation, analysis, or data processing.
  • Experience with interface control, fastener selection for high-vibration environments, and high-temperature materials.
  • Experience designing hardware in test-driven development environments with rapid iteration cycles.
  • M.S. in Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.
$113,948 - $170,922 a year
