Job description

Anesthesia Technician

Assist the anesthesia care provider with acquiring, preparing and use of equipment, supplies, and medications during the administration of anesthesia. Assist with special procedures and provide support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical cases.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Essential Functions)

  • Assists anesthesia staff during procedures. (55%)
  • Prepares, stocks and cleans anesthesia equipment. (35%)
  • Checks for outdated medications, restocks supplies and medications and, checks and cleans anesthesia machines. (5%)
  • Performs other duties as requested and assigned. (5%)
  • POSITION SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provides anesthesia technician services under the direct supervision of a licensed anesthesia care provider designated by the client, in accordance with state regulations.
  • Cleans, disinfects, orders/stocks and maintains routine anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain anesthesia medications, supplies, and equipment according to needs and schedules.
  • Cleans, organizes and maintains anesthesia workroom, supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems, pre, intra, and post anesthesia and with consideration and knowledge of age specific issues related to meeting the needs of the various patient groups.
  • Perform basic trouble shooting for monitors and equipment and reports defective equipment and equipment malfunctions appropriately/immediately.
  • Maintain established department policies. Procedures, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Documents and maintains preventative maintenance and quality records.
  • Assists with transport of patients and laboratory specimens as necessary.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds/meetings and in-services as needed.
  • Must work days/evening shifts and also some call on weekends may be involved.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Performs other duties as needed and/or assigned.
Qualifications

JOB SPECIFICATIONS (Minimum Requirements) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations: maintains strict confidentiality of client information.
  • Complies with Infection Control, Standards Precautions, and OSHA standards for the healthcare professional.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment (eg., face mask, goggles, gloves) as needed.
  • Organize and complete work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.
  • Ability to understand medical/surgical terminology.
  • Ability to take direction and speak distinctly, and to take directions from circulating nurse and anesthesia staff.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to think independently to proactively prepare and set up for needs of the patient for a particular type of case, i.e., setting up lines for CV cases, setting up for critical trauma cases and open heart cases and pediatric cases.
  • Must be professional, flexible, outgoing and have a positive attitude.

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma/GED Equivalent Required

EXPERIENCE

  • 3 years Anesthesia or related healthcare technician experience Preferred
  • 1 year experience in any role in an inpatient setting Preferred
  • Sucessful completion of a two year approved American Society of Anesthesia Technology and Technicians (ASATT) program Preferred.
  • Certified Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation Required
