Are Android developers still in demand?

Android developers are still in demand due to the widespread use of Android devices and the ongoing need for mobile app development. Skills in Java or Kotlin, along with experience in app design and development, remain valuable in the job market. The demand is expected to continue as mobile technology evolves and expands across industries.

What is an Android developer?

Android Developers are software professionals who design, build, and maintain applications for devices running the Android operating system. They use programming languages such as Java or Kotlin and work with Android Studio, the official integrated development environment. Android Developers are responsible for creating user-friendly, secure, and efficient mobile apps, often collaborating with designers and other engineers to deliver high-quality experiences. Their work can range from building simple utilities to complex applications for smartphones, tablets, or wearable devices.

How do Android developers typically collaborate with designers and product managers during the app development process?

Android Developers often work closely with designers to ensure that app interfaces are both visually appealing and technically feasible. They participate in regular meetings with product managers to clarify requirements, discuss project timelines, and prioritize features. Collaboration tools such as Jira, Figma, and Slack are commonly used to facilitate communication and feedback loops. This teamwork helps ensure that the final product aligns with both user expectations and business objectives.

What do Android developers do?

As an Android developer, your responsibilities and duties vary, depending on your position and the size of your team. You may be involved in the planning stage, aggregating requirements for the app, and planning how it will be developed. You may be part of the coding team that writes the program. Some developers work on the testing phase before the app is launched, and others work on patches to fix bugs as they are discovered. Coding updates and seeing them through to release is often a long-term and ongoing aspect of Android development. If you work independently or for a small firm, you may be involved in all phases of the development life cycle, whereas those employed by larger firms likely have specialized roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Android developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Android Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java or Kotlin, experience with Android SDK, and a solid understanding of mobile app architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Android Studio, version control systems like Git, and knowledge of APIs and libraries is also essential. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers deliver robust apps and collaborate well with teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for building high-quality, user-friendly applications that meet both technical and business requirements.

Is an Android Developer a good career?

An Android Developer is a viable career choice due to the widespread use of Android devices and the demand for mobile apps. Job description

Build Mobile Apps That Connect Professionals to the Tools They Depend On

Why Fieldpiece?

Fieldpiece is a privately held, global leader in professional HVACR tools and test instruments. We're known for developing innovative products that technicians rely on every dayโ€”and for investing in our people, our technology, and our future. Named one of the Best Places to Work in Southern California for four consecutive years, we're looking for talented people who want to make an impact while growing their careers.

Why This Role?

The mobile experience is becoming one of the most important ways customers interact with Fieldpiece products.

As a Senior iOS / Android Engineer, you'll design, develop, and support native iOS and Android applications that connect technicians to the data, diagnostics, and insights generated by our industry-leading tools. You'll work closely with Product, UX, Cloud Engineering, and Software Engineering teams to build intuitive, high-performance mobile applications that integrate with SaaS and DaaS platforms and help shape the future of connected HVACR technology.

This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll influence architecture, champion mobile development best practices, and help deliver applications that technicians depend on every day.

This position is based in our Orange, CA office with an exciting move to Tustin, CA in 2028.ย  We offer a hybrid work schedule with employees typically working onsite three days per week. Additional onsite days may be required for team collaboration, planning sessions, or other business needs. Travel is expected to be up to 10%.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, and maintain native iOS and Android applications using Swift, Objective-C, Kotlin, and Java.
  • Support the full application lifecycle, including design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing enhancements.
  • Build secure, high-performance mobile applications that integrate with cloud-based SaaS and DaaS platforms through RESTful APIs.
  • Optimize application performance, reliability, responsiveness, and maintainability across supported devices and operating systems.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues and contribute to high-quality, well-tested code with minimal technical debt.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, UX/UI, Cloud Engineering, and Software Engineering teams to deliver intuitive customer experiences.
  • Champion mobile engineering best practices while contributing to architecture, code quality, Agile delivery, and continuous improvement.

What Makes This Opportunity Different

  • Connected products. Build mobile applications that work seamlessly with professional HVACR tools used by technicians worldwide.
  • Modern technology stack. Develop native iOS and Android applications integrated with cloud platforms, REST APIs, AWS services, and connected technologies.
  • Meaningful customer impact. Your work directly improves how professionals diagnose, troubleshoot, and maintain critical HVACR systems.
  • Collaborative development. Work closely with Product, UX, Cloud Engineering, and Software Engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Innovation. Help shape the future of connected products by contributing to mobile architecture, AI-enabled capabilities, and evolving customer experiences.

In Your First Year, You'll Likely

  • Build relationships across the organization to become a trusted technical contributor for our native applications and deliver new features and enhancements that improve the customerโ€™s experience across iOS and Android platforms.
  • Improve and evolve our mobile architecture, standards/processes, application quality, performance, reliability, and maintainability through engineering best practices.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, including at least 3 years developing mobile applications.
  • Strong experience developing native iOS and/or Android applications using Swift, Objective-C, Kotlin, or Java.
  • Experience integrating mobile applications with RESTful APIs and cloud-based services.
  • Knowledge of mobile data storage technologies such as SQLite, Room, Core Data, or similar frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of server-side technologies such as Go, Node.js, or Python.
  • Experience using Git, GitHub, code reviews, and modern source control workflows.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Experience working in Agile software development environments.

Bonus Points If You Have

  • Experience developing applications that integrate with SaaS or DaaS platforms.
  • Experience with AWS cloud environments and cloud-hosted applications.
  • Experience supporting AI-assisted or AI-first software development practices.
  • Experience developing AI-enabled mobile features or automation.
  • Experience with connected devices, IoT platforms, HVAC technologies, or field-service applications.

Why Youโ€™ll Enjoy Working at Fieldpiece

  • As a privately held company, we invest for the long termโ€”in our people, our products, and our future. That means we can focus on innovation, continuous improvement, and building lasting careers rather than chasing short-term results.
  • Work alongside talented, collaborative teammates who are passionate about innovation and solving real-world problems.
  • Make a meaningful impact in a company where your ideas are heard, your expertise is valued, and your contributions help shape the future of our products and business.

Benefits & Perks

We believe great work starts with supporting our employees. Thatโ€™s why we offer a competitive total rewards package designed to promote your health, financial well-being, work-life balance, and professional growth.

  • Competitive base salary with annual bonus opportunity
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match and immediate vesting
