Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for a Process Safety and Risk Analysis Engineer Intern opportunity in Johnson City, TN.
Job Title: Process Safety and Risk Analysis Engineer Intern
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and analytical Process Safety and Risk Analysis Engineer Intern to support operational safety, hazard identification, and risk reduction initiatives within a chemical, industrial, or manufacturing environment. This internship provides hands-on experience in process safety management, risk assessment methodologies, incident prevention, and environmental health & safety programs.
The intern will work alongside engineering and operations professionals to help improve process reliability, reduce operational risk, and support compliance with industry safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) including:
  • HAZOP
  • What-If analyses
  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Risk ranking and mitigation reviews
  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM) and operational risk programs
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis activities
  • Help identify and evaluate: Process hazards, Equipment risks, Chemical handling risks, Operational vulnerabilities
  • Review: Standard operating procedures (SOPs), Risk assessment documentation, Emergency response procedures, Safety protocols
  • Conduct field safety inspections and risk assessments
  • Assist with Safety Data Sheet (SDS) management and chemical inventory reviews
  • Analyze operational and safety data to identify trends and improvement opportunities
  • Support continuous improvement and operational excellence initiatives

Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a degree in:
  • Chemical, Industrial, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering
  • Environmental Health & Safety
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Risk Management
  • Related technical discipline
  • Strong interest in: Process safety, Industrial risk analysis, Hazard mitigation, Manufacturing operations, Safety systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication and technical writing abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team environments

Preferred Coursework or Experience
Coursework or experience in any of the following is preferred:
  • Process safety management
  • Risk analysis
  • Hazardous materials management
  • Environmental compliance
  • Process operations
