As part of the Canadian Actuarial team, this role is responsible for delivering catastrophe (CAT) exposure analytics and pricing support for the Canadian portfolio, providing insights through portfolio analysis as well as regulatory and reinsurance reporting. The position works closely with the US Catastrophe Modeling team, bridging teams across geographies to ensure consistent methodology, shared expertise, and informed risk evaluation.
The role partners closely with underwriting, actuarial, and enterprise risk management teams, while contributing to data governance and ongoing analytics and data modernization initiatives. This position will work closely with the Catastrophe and Exposure Management team based in the US.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Lead CAT exposure monitoring and portfolio analytics, including monthly Probable Maximum Loss (PML) and Average Annual Loss (AAL) analysis, portfolio aggregation, and key account-level insights.

  • Analyze changes in CAT metrics and develop scenario-based insights to support underwriting and business decisions. Explain the impact of various catastrophe modeling metrics, attributes, and assumptions to various stakeholders

  • Perform detailed exposure analysis at account and location levels, including loss attribution and sensitivity testing, with delivery of executive-level reporting.

  • Own development and enhancement of CAT pricing tools, ensuring alignment with underwriting workflows, and provide pricing guidance and model interpretation support to underwriters.

  • Lead real-time CAT event response analytics. This includes exposure tracking, impact assessment, communication of insights during active events, and supporting preparedness planning.

  • Support regulatory and actuarial reporting, including CAT-related inputs for regulatory reporting.

  • Provide analytics to help Business Unit leadership understand their portfolio's exposure and how it can further improve profitability.

  • Provide analytical support for reinsurance and capital modeling, including exposure preparation, treaty analysis, and scenario-based capital insights.

  • Act as a data steward for exposure and portfolio data, including validation, quality control, and establishment of data governance and standards.

  • Deliver regular reporting and insights to senior leadership and act as a liaison across actuarial, underwriting, enterprise risk management and operations teams.

  • Contribute to actuarial data modernization and tooling initiatives, including development of rating engine requirements, data architecture, and integration of analytics tools.

  • Other ad hoc data analysis as required.

May perform additional duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationship

Typically Director or above

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of core functions of an insurance company and general insurance. Commercial insurance knowledge is a plus.

  • Strong proficiency with SQL. Experience programming in a language such as VBA, R, or Python is desired.

  • Advanced technical knowledge of financial and statistical practices, procedures and principles, which may include a specialty area. Knowledge of the Verisk or Moody's RMS CAT model is a plus.

  • Ability to analyze data and provide valuable insights.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other enterprise business tools, including responsible use of AIenabled technologies (such as Copilot or similar) to enhance efficiency, analysis and workflow in accordance with company policies.

  • Proven problem-solving capabilities. Self-starter with demonstrated ability to generate new ideas and work well with a team.

  • Solid project management, organization and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant discipline such as Actuarial Sciences, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent
  • Typically a minimum of seven years of related experience.
  • Data Science or related certifications preferred
