Analog Layout information
What is an analog layout?
An Analog Layout job involves designing the physical layout of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits (ICs). Engineers in this role translate circuit schematics into silicon by placing and routing components while considering performance, manufacturability, and reliability. They ensure proper matching, signal integrity, and minimize issues like parasitics and noise. Tools like Cadence Virtuoso or Synopsys Custom Compiler are commonly used in this process.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the analog layout position, and why are they important?
To thrive as an Analog Layout engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, semiconductor device physics, and hands-on experience with analog integrated circuit design. Proficiency with CAD tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, as well as familiarity with industry standards and design rule checks (DRC), is crucial. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication are important soft skills in this position. These qualifications ensure the accuracy and functionality of complex analog circuits, contributing to successful chip design projects.
What does an analog layout engineer do?
An Analog Layout engineer typically spends their day creating and optimizing the physical layout of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits using specialized EDA tools. Responsibilities often include ensuring layouts meet electrical performance, area, and manufacturability requirements by closely collaborating with circuit designers and verification teams. The role also involves running design rule checks (DRC) and layout versus schematic (LVS) verification, troubleshooting any layout issues, and revising designs as needed. Regular communication with team members is essential to maintain project timelines and align on design specifications.

Job description
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop electrical systems for products/equipment, from concept through release and production support.
- Translate requirements into electrical architectures, schematics, wiring diagrams, and interface/control definitions.
- Select and specify electrical components (power supplies, sensors, actuators, connectors, harnessing, PCBA components, etc.).
- Capable to repair PCBA's including soldering through hole, SMT, fine pitch components and wire
- Create and maintain engineering documentation: schematics, BOMs, cable/harness drawings, wire diagram, test procedures, component libraries, and change orders (ECR/ECO).
- Build prototypes and support lab/field testing; troubleshoot issues using appropriate diagnostic tools (DMM, oscilloscope, logic analyzer, etc.).
- Create verification and validation (V & V) documentation (DVP&R) and perform virtual and/or physical product V & V testing.
- Support verification and validation by developing test plans & test fixtures, executing tests, analyzing results, and documenting conclusions.
- Collaborate with manufacturing on design-for-manufacture/assembly, wiring practices, work instructions, and transition to production.
- Investigate and resolve production and field issues; perform root-cause analysis and drive corrective actions (CAPA).
- Ensure designs meet applicable safety, EMC/EMI, environmental, and regulatory requirements as needed.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments (DFMEA), and project planning; communicate progress and risks.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or closely related field).
- Typically 4-7+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Proficiency with electrical design tools (e.g., OrCAD/Altium, AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, KiCad, or similar).
- Experience creating schematics, wiring diagrams, and electrical documentation packages.
- Working knowledge of fundamental electrical engineering principles (analog/digital basics, power distribution, grounding, protection, sensors/actuators and transmission line characteristics).
- Hands-on troubleshooting ability with standard lab instrumentation.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with embedded processing in C.
- Schematic and PCBA design and layout.
- Familiarity with relevant standards and compliance (e.g., UL/IEC, NFPA 70/79, CE marking, EMC).
- Experience with cable/harness design, connector selection, and environmental sealing practices.
- Experience with functional safety concepts and risk methods (FMEA, fault tree).
- Exposure to PLM/ERP systems (Windchill) and structured change control (ECR/ECO).
Core Competencies
- Practical problem solving and attention to detail
- Ownership of deliverables and follow-through
- Clear technical capabilities
- Clear technical documentation
- Collaboration and stakeholder management
- Comfort balancing performance, cost, manufacturability, and schedule
Work Environment / Physical Requirements (optional)
- Combination of office, lab, and manufacturing floor work.
- Occasional travel to suppliers/customer sites as needed.
- Ability to safely work around electrical equipment and comply with all safety procedures.
- Lift 40 lbs.
Reporting & Collaboration
- Reports to: Engineering Manager(s) & Electrical Engineering Lead.
- Works closely with: Engineering Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Project Management, Field/Service, and Engineering peers.
