Job description

Position Summary

American Steel & Aluminum is seeking a motivated and hands-on Manufacturing Engineer to support and improve our manufacturing operations in Auburn, Massachusetts. This position is ideal for an engineer with experience in metal fabrication who enjoys solving problems, improving processes, and driving operational excellence. The successful candidate will work closely with production, maintenance, quality, and leadership to improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance.

This role offers a clear career path for an ambitious individual who aspires to grow into Operations Management positions.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Analyze and improve manufacturing processes to increase productivity, quality, and efficiency.
  • Lead Lean Manufacturing initiatives including waste reduction, process standardization, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflow, material handling, equipment utilization, and production throughput.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and process documentation.
  • Collaborate with production teams to troubleshoot manufacturing issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Support new product introductions and process improvements from concept through implementation.
  • Utilize ERP systems to support production planning, inventory accuracy, reporting, and operational analysis.
  • Participate in capital equipment evaluations and implementation projects.
  • Assist with manufacturing automation initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce manual processes.
  • Work with maintenance and production personnel to improve equipment reliability and uptime.
  • Analyze production data and recommend improvements using measurable performance metrics.
  • Support quality initiatives by identifying root causes and implementing sustainable corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Mentor and train production employees on new processes and continuous improvement methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of manufacturing engineering experience in metals, steel, aluminum, or metal fabrication environments preferred.
  • Experience implementing Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience working within an ERP system in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and project management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Must be a "US Person" per ITAR regulations. Per the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) (22 CFR § 120.62), a U.S. Person is any individual who is a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident (green card holder), or a "protected individual".

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with metal fabrication processes such as cutting, forming, machining, welding, or finishing.
  • Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement experience.
  • Experience with manufacturing automation or robotics is a plus.
  • Experience programming manufacturing equipment (CNC, lasers, press brakes, automation systems, etc.) is a plus.
  • CAD software experience (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar) is a plus.
  • Experience with data analysis and manufacturing performance metrics.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and Office Suite skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in both office and manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to stand and walk throughout the production facility.
  • Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
