Role Overview

The American Red Cross CPR Instructor plays a critical role in promoting safety and preparedness by delivering high-quality CPR, First Aid, AED, and Lifeguarding certification courses. This position is responsible for teaching life-saving skills and ensuring that participants gain the knowledge and confidence needed to respond effectively in emergency situations.


The ideal candidate is passionate about safety education, demonstrates strong instructional and communication skills, and fosters a supportive, engaging learning environment aligned with the YMCA’s mission and commitment to community wellbeing.


Key Responsibilities


Instruction & Course Delivery

  • Plan and deliver CPR, First Aid, AED, and Lifeguarding courses in accordance with American Red Cross standards
  • Provide clear instructions, demonstrations, and hands-on skill development opportunities
  • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles, skill levels, and age groups
  • Evaluate participant competency through practical skills assessment and written evaluations

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all training sessions comply with American Red Cross guidelines and YMCA safety policies
  • Maintain active supervision and ensure participant safety during all training activities
  • Promote safety awareness and emergency preparedness best practices
  • Maintain professional instruction standards and adhere to abuse prevention and professional boundary policies

Documentation & Administrative Support

  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, certifications, and participant completion
  • Submit required course documentation in a timely and accurate manner
  • Ensure training equipment is properly maintained, inspected, and stored
  • Assist with scheduling courses and supporting training operations as needed

Professional Development & Community Engagement

  • Maintain current American Red Cross Instructor certifications
  • Stay informed on updated safety standards, protocols, and instructional methods
  • Support YMCA staff certification needs and community safety initiatives
  • Promote training opportunities to staff, members, and the community

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor certification required
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid and Lifeguarding certifications preferred
  • Strong communication, presentation, and instructional skills
  • Ability to teach and evaluate participants in both classroom and hands-on environments
  • Commitment to YMCA mission, safety standards, and professional conduct

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous teaching, training, or adult education experience
  • Lifeguard certification and aquatic safety experience
  • Experience training diverse audiences
  • Background in safety training, public health, or emergency response

Benefits You’ll Receive

  • Complimentary YMCA Membership for Part-Time employees. An additional adult family member may be added for $20 per month.
  • Participation in the National YMCA Retirement Fund, a defined contribution plan. Employees become eligible for a 12% employer contribution after completing 1,000 hours of service in each of two 12-month periods (doesn’t have to be consecutive).
