What is alder law?

Alder Law typically refers to a law firm or legal practice specializing in elder law or related legal services. Elder law attorneys focus on legal issues that affect older adults and their families, such as estate planning, guardianship, Medicaid planning, long-term care, and elder abuse. The name 'Alder Law' may also refer to a specific law firm, such as AlderLaw, which is known for handling personal injury, civil rights, and employment law cases. It's important to verify the specific context to understand the services provided.

What types of cases does an alder law attorney typically handle?

Attorneys working at an elder law firm generally focus on legal issues affecting older adults and their families, such as estate planning, Medicaid planning, guardianship, long-term care arrangements, and elder abuse cases. Daily responsibilities can include meeting with clients to discuss their needs, drafting wills and trusts, preparing legal documents related to healthcare and finances, and representing clients in court or administrative hearings. Collaboration with social workers, healthcare professionals, and financial advisors is also common in order to create comprehensive solutions for clients. This role requires strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a compassionate approach to sensitive matters.

To thrive as an Elder Law Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, a valid law license, and expertise in areas like estate planning, Medicaid, and guardianship. Familiarity with legal research tools such as Westlaw or LexisNexis, and specialized certifications like Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA), are often advantageous.
