Job description
Are you a highly experienced, ASCP-certified laboratory professional with a passion for developing others and advancing quality patient care? UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Laboratory Services Educator to join our team in the Clinical Laboratory Building in Oakland, directly across from UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. This role supports one of the region's busiest and most complex laboratory environments-a high-volume Beckman Core Laboratory that plays a critical role in delivering timely, accurate results for patients across our health system.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and implement examinations and/or competencies to determine both employees progress and the effectiveness of the instructors.
- Collaborate with the system educational programs to ensure the appliable elements are covered to allow for certification exams.
- Serve as liaison for degree and certificate programs as well as accreditation agencies (CAP, DOH, etc.).Facilitate agreements in appropriate content/rotation areas throughout the clinical laboratory.
- Schedule rotations and provide appropriate paperwork for student/program.
- Serve as point of contact for students before/during/after rotations.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including technical support as determined by Lab Leadership.
- Develops curriculum in accordance with laboratory professional organizations and with collaboration of faculty.
- Develops and maintains an applicable assessment tool(s) (ex. written assessment, hands on exercises for assessment).
- Development of MLS/MLT training program that includes content for training all aspects of the department. Program applicable for any level, from staff with no experience and no formal laboratory science training to providing refresher training for a trained and experienced MLS/MLT.
- Maintain list of current staff that are approved to conduct training.
- Ongoing competency assessment of trainers.
- Continuing education and assessment of trainers.
- Carries out educational exercises (i.e., hands on case review, MediaLab courses). Teaching including bench instruction and the didactic lecture material, as needed.
- Stores and maintains teaching specimens/samples (i.e. stock organism cultures, teaching slides, digital images).Maintains communication with all the healthcare team members that help to encourage the development of the trainee. Provides appropriate feedback and coaching to trainee regarding performance.
- Collates feedback from all participating instructors to provide comprehensive feedback to the trainee and any applicable physician leader(s).
- Evaluation of each employee new to the department for current laboratory science knowledge.
- Prepare and implement examinations to determine both employees progress and the effectiveness of the instructors.
- Collaborate with the system educational programs to ensure the appliable elements are covered to allow for certification exams
- Administrative oversight for scheduling trainees for the department. Trainees include (not limited to): laboratory associates, residents, fellows.
- Collaborating with the trainees to meet the personal needs for education requirements and tailor the experience for appropriateness.
- Serves as the liaison between trainees and laboratory operations/faculty.
- Assists with monthly QA/QC as determined by Lab leadership.
- Designs and coordinates curriculum/job aides/training guides in the various specialty areas within the laboratory.
- Development of coursework to include: Basic theory of laboratory medicine and applicable methods/specialties Current technologies and applicable instrumentation, including manufacturer's recommendations.
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science, and 4 years Clinical Laboratory experience, OR Associate of Science degree from an accredited college/university or major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and 8 years of clinical laboratory experience required.
- Experience in educating others in medical laboratory practices preferred.
- 7 to 10 years of experience strongly preferred
- Experience in chemistry, hematology, uranalysis, coagulation, and serology preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Am Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certification required (may be obtained within 12 months of hire).
