Job Description
The Instructor of Health Occupations is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction, laboratory, and clinical supervision that supports student learning, skill development, and successful completion of program and industry certification requirements. The Instructor teaches a variety of health occupation courses, including but not limited to phlebotomy, cardiovascular technician, Basic Life Support (BLS), first aid, and Healthcare Career Readiness.
The Instructor performs instructional, administrative, and program-support duties while contributing to the mission, goals, and effectiveness of Wilkes Community College through teaching excellence, student engagement, service, and professional development.
This is a full-time, 12-month position primarily housed at Herring Hall, Wilkes Campus, with the possibility of instructional assignments at other campuses or off-site clinical locations. Evening and weekend hours may be required to meet instructional and clinical needs.

Essential Duties Summary
Job duties will include:
- Develop and teach health occupations courses, including phlebotomy, cardiovascular technician training, CPR certification courses, Healthcare Career Readiness, and other healthcare and workforce development courses as assigned.
- Provide instruction in classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical settings as appropriate.
- Prepare classes, instructional materials, assessments, and course documentation aligned with state, accrediting, and industry requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable healthcare standards, safety practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Model professional healthcare behaviors, including effective communication, dependability, ethical practice, critical thinking, and patient-centered care.
- Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, competencies, certifications, and evaluations.
- Evaluate student learning through written, practical, and competency-based assessments aligned with certification and workforce standards.
- Maintain a safe and organized lab environment, including infection control practices and proper handling of equipment and materials.
- Maintain and monitor instructional equipment, laboratory supplies, and inventory.
- Support program marketing efforts through outreach activities, community engagement, and partnerships with healthcare organizations.
- Collaborate with clinical partners to coordinate student clinical experiences, when applicable.
- Support credential testing preparation and assist students in obtaining industry-recognized credentials.
- Maintain current knowledge of healthcare trends, technologies, and certification requirements.
- Participate in curriculum development, program review, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participate in professional development activities and maintain required certifications and credentials.
- Serve on college committees as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in a healthcare-related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Current healthcare credential(s) relevant to assigned instructional areas.
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor certification or ability to obtain within a designated timeframe.
- Minimum of two (2) years of relevant clinical experience in a healthcare setting.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Commitment to professional development and the mission of a comprehensive community college.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field.
- AHA CPR Instructor certified.
- Certified EKG Technician/ASCP Certified Phlebotomy Technician.
- Teaching experience in a community college, continuing education, healthcare, or workforce development setting.
- Proficiency with instructional technology and learning management systems.
- Experience teaching multiple Health Occupations courses.
- Experience with clinical supervision and competency-based instruction.
- Experience working with diverse student populations.
Physical Demands
Work is primarily performed under general supervision in the classroom, laboratory, office, healthcare, and clinical environments with appropriate climate controls. Travel between campuses, healthcare facilities, and community locations may be required. Evening and weekend work may be necessary to support instructional schedules and workforce training needs.

Essential functions: Positions require lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate effectively, ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods, and ability to move between classrooms, labs, and clinical sites. Must be able to demonstrate and assist with healthcare-related procedures requiring fine motor skills and physical coordination.
Light Work: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently to move equipment, supplies, or instructional materials. Requires standing, walking, bending, reaching, and assisting with clinical demonstrations.
Mental Application: Requires memory for details and content of assigned healthcare disciplines, critical thinking, adaptability, emotional stability, problem-solving, instructional planning, organizational skills, and effective decision-making.
Salary Grade
Salary
Salary Range: $50,000 to $65,000 based on education and experience in accordance with the college salary plan.
