In an Agile project, key roles include the Product Owner, who manages the product backlog and prioritizes features; the Scrum Master, who facilitates the team’s processes and removes obstacles; and the Development Team, responsible for delivering the product increments. These roles collaborate closely in iterative cycles to ensure continuous delivery and adaptation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Agile Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Agile Project Manager, you need a solid understanding of project management principles, Agile methodologies (such as Scrum or Kanban), and experience leading cross-functional teams. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana, and certifications such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or PMI-ACP are commonly expected. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and strong facilitation skills help foster team collaboration and resolve conflicts effectively. These skills and qualifications are vital for delivering projects efficiently in rapidly changing environments and ensuring stakeholder satisfaction.

What jobs can I get with Agile?

Jobs related to Agile include Agile Coach, Scrum Master, Product Owner, Agile Project Manager, and Agile Business Analyst. They are common in software development, IT, and project management environments that prioritize iterative delivery and team collaboration.

What are Agile Project Managers?

Agile Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects using Agile methodologies, such as Scrum or Kanban. They focus on facilitating teamwork, ensuring clear communication, and helping teams adapt to changes quickly. Their main goal is to deliver high-quality products efficiently by breaking work into smaller, manageable tasks and promoting continuous improvement. Agile Project Managers also remove obstacles that may hinder the team's progress and act as a bridge between stakeholders and the development team.

What is Agile project work?

Agile project work involves managing projects through iterative cycles called sprints, emphasizing collaboration, flexibility, and continuous improvement. Agile project roles often require familiarity with frameworks like Scrum or Kanban and tools such as Jira or Trello to track progress and adapt to changing requirements.

How does an Agile Project Manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure project success?

An Agile Project Manager works closely with cross-functional teams by facilitating regular communication, organizing sprint planning meetings, and ensuring everyone is aligned with project goals. They actively remove obstacles that may hinder team progress and encourage continuous feedback through daily stand-ups and sprint retrospectives. This collaborative approach helps foster a transparent work environment where team members from different disciplines can contribute their expertise, leading to more efficient and successful project outcomes.

Job Description

We are seeking an Agile Project Manager to support delivery within a Scrum-based engineering environment while also coordinating time-critical internal initiatives that require structured planning and execution. This role combines agile facilitation, project planning, stakeholder coordination, and performance tracking to help teams deliver effectively across both iterative and deadline-driven work.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Support backlog readiness, sprint capacity planning, and dependency visibility to improve predictability and execution.
  • Coach teams on agile practices, continuous improvement, and effective cross-functional collaboration.
  • Manage selected internal initiatives using a waterfall project approach when timing, scope, governance, or coordination needs require it.
  • Define project scope, timelines, milestones, risks, assumptions, and resource needs for priority initiatives.
  • Track progress across agile delivery and structured projects, ensuring stakeholders have clear visibility into status, blockers, and tradeoffs.
  • Maintain project documentation, action logs, milestone plans, and reporting artifacts.
  • Partner with business and technical stakeholders to align priorities, resolve issues, and support on-time execution.
Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of Scrum principles, agile delivery practices, and iterative planning.
  • Solid project management skills, including scope management, timeline planning, risk tracking, and stakeholder communication.
  • Ability to operate effectively in both agile and traditional project delivery models.
  • Experience defining and monitoring KPIs, delivery metrics, and team health indicators.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Comfortable working in Jira, Confluence, and standard project reporting tools.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and maintain structure in fast-moving environments.

Experience

  • Proven experience in an Agile Project Manager, Scrum Master, Technical Project Manager, or similar role.
  • Experience supporting engineering, platform, data, or technology teams in a Scrum environment.
  • Experience managing internal initiatives that require structured planning, milestone tracking, and deadline management.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance team facilitation with project coordination responsibilities.
  • Experience using metrics to improve delivery predictability, process efficiency, and accountability.
  • Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders, including engineering, product, operations, and leadership.

Metrics and performance

  • Define and track KPIs related to sprint predictability, milestone attainment, throughput, cycle time, and follow-through on improvement actions.
  • Use metrics to identify risks, bottlenecks, and improvement opportunities at the team or initiative level.
  • Support performance evaluation through objective reporting on delivery outcomes, planning reliability, and execution effectiveness.
  • Promote metrics as a tool for continuous improvement and planning quality, not individual micromanagement.
