Job description

Class A CDL Driver

Company Overview

James E Fulton & Sons, Inc. is a family-owned excavating and trucking contractor serving Southwest Michigan. For decades, we have built our reputation on quality work, reliable service, and a team that takes pride in doing the job right. Our recognizable yellow-and-white fleet reflects our focus on visibility, professionalism, and well-maintained equipment.

We work on a wide range of excavation and utility projects in and around Kalamazoo, MI. Our drivers are essential to keeping jobs moving safely and efficiently, and we invest in people who want a stable role with room to grow their driving skills and responsibilities.

The Opportunity

This is a local Class A CDL driving position based in Kalamazoo, MI. You will be home every night while running a variety of local hauls, including aggregate, materials, freight/scrap, and equipment in support of our excavation and utility crews. If you like a mix of road driving and jobsite work, and prefer a team that runs organized jobs and takes care of the trucks, this role is a strong fit.

We are looking for "universal" drivers who are comfortable in a dump truck, confident on active construction sites, and able to handle basic paperwork and app-based timekeeping. As your skills grow, you will have the opportunity to move into more advanced hauling (such as lowboy or gravel train work) with corresponding increases in pay and responsibility.

What You'll Do
  • Safely operate Class A CDL dump trucks on local routes in and around Kalamazoo (no overnight travel).
  • Haul aggregate, materials, freight/scrap, and support trucking needs for excavation and utility projects.
  • Work confidently on active construction sites, including backing, dumping, staging, spotting, and positioning safely around crews and equipment.
  • Load, unload, and properly secure loads using chains, straps, and/or tarps as required, and clean out dump beds/boxes as needed.
  • Perform daily inspections and basic maintenance checks, keep your truck clean, and promptly report any mechanical or safety issues.
What Success Looks Like
  • Within the first 3–6 months, you consistently complete your assigned hauls safely, on time, and in compliance with DOT and company policies.
  • You become a reliable part of the field team, communicating clearly with dispatch, foremen, and crew so materials and equipment are where they need to be, when they need to be there.
  • You demonstrate confident operation on jobsites, minimizing backing issues, protecting people and property, and earning the trust of site supervisors.
  • You maintain accurate logs, use the company app for timekeeping and workflows without issue, and help keep your truck in service by catching and reporting maintenance needs early.
What We're Looking For
  • Valid Class A CDL with Double Endorsement and some experience hauling aggregate or similar materials.
  • Three or more years of CDL driving experience preferred, with a safe driving record that meets insurability standards.
  • Current DOT medical card (or the ability to obtain and maintain one) and the ability to pass pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing under CDL/DOT rules.
  • Comfort working outdoors on active construction sites in changing weather, with the physical ability to climb in and out of trucks, secure loads, clean beds/boxes, and handle typical jobsite tasks.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Pay: $23 to $31 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Health insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan and paid holidays.
  • Full-time, W-2 employment with local work, generally starting between 5:00–7:00 AM and finishing between 3:00–7:00 PM (job-dependent), no overnight travel, with voluntary weekend opportunities.
How to Apply

If this sounds like the kind of driving role and team you are looking for, please submit your resume or work history and contact information. Qualified candidates will be contacted with next steps in the hiring process.
