Job description

Job Summary
This position is located in the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DCFEMS), Apparatus Division. The mission of the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services is to preserve life and promote health and safety through excellent pre-hospital treatment and transportation, fire prevention, fire suppression and rescue activities, and homeland security awareness.
The Motor Vehicle Operator (Tow Truck) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy-duty tow trucks and recovery vehicles used to transport, recover, and reposition departmental vehicles and apparatus in support of fleet operations and emergency response readiness.
Duties and Responsibility
Operates heavy duty tow trucks and recovery vehicles to tow, transport, recover, and reposition disabled, damaged, or improperly positioned departmental vehicles and apparatus. Performs towing and recovery operations, including winching, loading, unloading, securing, and stabilizing vehicles and equipment in accordance with established safety procedures and operating instructions. Responds to towing and recovery requests at fire stations, roadways, apparatus yards, training facilities, and emergency scenes. Conducts pre-operation and post-operation inspections of assigned tow trucks and recovery equipment to ensure safe operating condition. Reports mechanical deficiencies, safety hazards, or equipment malfunctions. Uses chains, straps, winches, dollies, hooks, bars, and related recovery equipment safely and effectively.
Maintains required records and documentation related to towing activities, vehicle movements, and equipment usage. Complies with applicable traffic laws, safety regulations, departmental policies, and operating procedures during all towing and recovery operations. Performs routine cleaning and basic care of assigned vehicles and equipment.

License and Certifications
Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B or higher, appropriate for the operation of assigned tow trucks and recovery vehicles.
Required endorsements, including air brake endorsement, must be maintained in accordance with federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Failure to maintain required licensure or endorsements may result in removal from the position.
Working Conditions/Environment
Work is performed primarily in outdoor and field environments, including roadways, fire stations, and apparatus yards. The incumbent is exposed to traffic hazards, weather conditions, noise, dirt, grease, and vibration. Appropriate safety equipment and protective gear are required.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFGE 3721. You may be required to have union dues or other applicable fees deducted from your salary.
The Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department is a 24-hour/7-days a week operation. Rotating and weekend shift.
Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.
