What do aerospace engineers do?

Aerospace Engineers manufacture and design aircraft, satellites, missiles, aeronautical and astronautical products and technologies for development, research, defense, and commercial use. They document and evaluate the production of aircraft and aircraft technologies, including commercial and military airplanes, propulsion systems, navigation systems, instrumentation, communication, and thermodynamic and aerodynamic materials used in flight. Aerospace Engineers use highly complex computer systems and software to model, design, evaluate, and simulate parts, products, and vehicles in order to determine if proposals are financially feasible and whether designs will meet regulatory and safety standards. They confer with each other on large-scale projects that require group input, completing a multitude of tasks on a single project through the shared duties of many engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aerospace engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aerospace Engineer, you need a solid background in aerodynamics, propulsion, materials science, and systems engineering, typically backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or ANSYS, and industry certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in collaborative and innovative environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing safe, efficient, and cutting-edge aerospace systems that meet rigorous industry standards.

What is the difference between Aerospace Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectAerospace EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in aerospace or aeronautical engineering; often a Professional Engineer (PE) licenseBachelor's in mechanical engineering; PE license optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning aircraft, spacecraft, satellites; working in labs, design offices, and manufacturingDesigning machinery, engines, HVAC systems; working in factories, labs, and offices
Industry UsageAerospace, defense, space explorationAutomotive, manufacturing, energy, robotics
Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

In summary, aerospace engineers specialize in designing and developing aircraft and spacecraft, often requiring specific aerospace credentials and working in specialized environments. Mechanical engineers have a broader focus on machinery and systems across various industries, with more general credentials. The key difference lies in their industry focus and the types of projects they handle.

What are some common challenges aerospace engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Aerospace engineers often collaborate with professionals from fields like electrical, mechanical, and software engineering, which can present communication and coordination challenges. Navigating different technical languages, aligning project goals, and integrating diverse components require strong teamwork and adaptability. Successful aerospace engineers proactively build cross-functional relationships, participate in regular project meetings, and stay open to feedback to ensure seamless integration of all systems. These collaborative skills are just as essential as technical expertise in bringing complex aerospace projects to completion.

Job description

Principal level GNSS / PNT Systems Engineer

The Opportunity: We are seeking a Principal level GNSS / PNT Systems Engineer to provide technical leadership in architecting, developing, and validating advanced test solutions for CRPA antennas, GNSS receivers, and next generation LEO/MEO PNT signals. In this role, you will define system level test strategies, lead complex RF/signal simulation architectures, and shape the technical direction of future PNT capability development. You will work across RF, digital signal processing, and algorithm teams to ensure our PNT solutions meet the highest performance and resiliency standards expected in contested and evolving operational environments.

About the Company

Safran Federal Systems provides Resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (R-PNT) solutions and custom engineering services to U.S. Government agencies, defense organizations and their contractors. Safran Federal Systems is authorized to work on the full spectrum of U.S. Government classified and unclassified projects, in addition to supporting strategic partnerships for key defense PNT technologies.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical authority for endโ€‘toโ€‘end test architecture development supporting qualification of CRPAs, GNSS receivers, and multiโ€‘orbit PNT signal sources.
  • Develop and oversee complex scenario modelsโ€”dynamic Doppler environments, orbital visibility profiles, threat scenarios, and missionโ€‘representative degradation conditions.
  • Architect advanced RF test configurations involving multiโ€‘channel GNSS/LEO/MEO simulation systems, phaseโ€‘coherent distribution, interference injection, and precision timing frameworks.
  • Drive the creation and validation of newโ€‘signal simulation capabilities for emerging LEO/MEO PNT systems, alternative waveforms, and hybrid PNT constructs.
  • Lead highโ€‘level analysis of spatial processing performance, including beamforming, nulling, interference mitigation, and multiโ€‘element calibration.
  • Evaluate receiver performance: sensitivity, tracking dynamics, antiโ€‘jam/spoof robustness, and multiโ€‘orbit signal fusion.
  • Lead major lab and field test campaigns, setting technical objectives, ensuring data quality, and guiding rootโ€‘cause analyses.
  • Provide technical leadership for design reviews, program capture efforts, roadmap planning, and customer engagements.
  • Mentor engineering teams, including active mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving PNT threats, multiโ€‘orbit architectures, CRPA advancements, and industry standards.
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s or masterโ€™s degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, systems engineering, physics, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in GNSS/PNT system engineering, RF test development, receiver/antenna integration, or advanced PNT research.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in CRPA systems, phasedโ€‘array testing, and spatial signal processing.
  • Deep expertise with GNSS and nonโ€‘GNSS signals, including nextโ€‘generation LEO/MEO PNT concepts.
  • Strong proficiency with multiโ€‘channel signal simulators, RF vector generators, spectrum analyzers, and PNTโ€‘specific test environments.
  • Proven ability to architect complex test frameworks and guide teams in their implementation.
  • Advanced modeling and analysis experience with MATLAB, Python, or equivalent environments.
  • Proficiency in C++ for simulation tooling, systems integration, or highโ€‘performance processing modules.
  • Experience with PNT architecture, orbital modeling, timeโ€‘transfer techniques, and highโ€‘dynamic signal simulation preferred.
  • Expertise in CRPA calibration, array manifolds, interference threat modeling, and advanced jamming/spoofing scenarios preferred.
  • Familiarity with PNT resiliency techniques and MILโ€‘STD environmental/qualification testing preferred.
  • Experience with hardwareโ€‘inโ€‘theโ€‘loop (HIL) simulation systems preferred.
  • Active or eligible security clearance, preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, with a track record leading crossโ€‘disciplinary engineering efforts and influencing design direction.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn.
  • Ability to move throughout the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position approximately 50% of the time.
