Job Description
This full-time position is based at the Main Branch of the Onslow County Public Library in Jacksonville.
The Onslow County Public Library is seeking an energetic, creative, and detail-oriented Adult Program Assistant to join our team. This role combines direct public service with dynamic program leadership. You will provide intermediate, skilled administrative support at the circulation desk while simultaneously designing, implementing, and evaluating engaging programs for adult patrons.
Reporting to the Head of the Adult Services Team, you will exercise independent judgment to balance excellent customer service with high-quality programming. Your work will directly support our mission to "serve our community by connecting people to resources that enrich, empower, and inspire.

Work Environment
This position is based primarily in a public library setting with occasional off-site events or community engagements. Evening and weekend hours are required.

Position Responsibilities

  • Public Service Operations:
    • Assists patrons with circulation processes (checking materials in/out, renewals, and account management).
    • Provides knowledgeable, courteous support for information requests, research inquiries, and general library services.
    • Resolves patron concerns promptly and professionally, maintaining a focus on customer satisfaction.
    • Offers reader's advisory to help patrons discover books and resources that match their interests.
  • Program Design and Implementation:
    • Develops, implements, and evaluates a diverse range of adult programs (workshops, cultural events, discussions, and classes) aligned with the library's mission and community interests.
    • Innovates content and delivery methods (including digital/hybrid formats) to engage broad audiences.
    • Manages all program logistics: scheduling, venue preparation, material organization, equipment setup, and vendor coordination.
    • Collaborates with community partners, speakers, and facilitators to enhance program quality and offerings.
    • Evaluates program effectiveness using attendance data, feedback, and community response to inform future offerings.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Promotes programs through various communication channels, includingsocial media, marketing materials, and community outreach.
    • Builds and maintain relationships with local organizations to increase participation.
    • Represents the library at outreach events and off-site community engagements as assigned.
    • Responds to patron feedback and suggestions with empathy and professionalism.
  • Administrative and Operational Support:
    • Maintains accurate records of program schedules, attendance, budgets, and resources.
    • Ensures compliance with library policies and procedures in all programming and service activities.
    • Exercises independent judgment in decision-making and problem-solving related to public service and programming.
    • Collaborates with library staff to ensure a cohesive approach to adult services and programming.
    • Adapts to changing needs and priorities within the library.
    • Performs special projects and other related duties as assigned
    • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteering.

Qualifications
Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact professionally with diverse populations; proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new digital tools (e.g., library catalogs, registration systems); ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, and work independently; ability to exercise independent judgment in problem-solving and decision-making.
Education, Experience, and Special Requirements
Associates/Technical degree with coursework in library science or related field and moderate experience working in a library or equivalent combination of education and experience in library, customer service, or community-focused roles.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Education, or a related field
Experience in library services, program management, or a related area
Familiarity with social media platforms, Canva, Zoom, and online event management systems
Knowledge of local community resources and demographics

Health Insurance
Health Insurance is provided by Cigna and covers a wide variety of healthcare services.
Dental Insurance
Dental insurance is provided by Delta Dental to full-time employees and covers a percentage of basic to major dental procedures, including orthodontia for children and adults.
Vision Insurance
Vision insurance is provided by MetLife to full-time employees and covers a variety of materials (contacts and glasses frames/lenses) and an annual eye exam.
North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System
Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit.
NC401k
The County contributes 1% of employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 4%.
Vacation Leave
Regular full-time employees earn 13.5 days of vacation leave per year. With each 5-year increment of employment, vacation accrual increases.
Sick Leave
Regular full-time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year.
Paid Holidays
County employees receive paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners approves and may adjust the schedule as deemed necessary.
ComPsych Mental Health Services
The County provides Mental Health and Life Services through ComPsych to help employees and their families with personal, family and job-related problems such as counseling, crisis support, work-life resources, legal and financial consultations, and organizational support tools.
Supplemental Benefits
County employees are also offered a variety of supplemental benefits such as Life Insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts, 457b Deferred Compensation Plan, and MetLife Supplemental Plans.
