Job description

Job Title: Lead English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor

Job Status: Full-time

Job Summary: Under limited supervision, the Lead English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor uses intermediate skills obtained through experience and training to lead a group of instructors in the education of adults in which English is not their primary language. Directs the creation of lesson plans designed to teach verbal and written skills needed and observes classroom instructions. Directs day-to-day activities of other instructors using established policies and procedures and sets priorities to ensure task completion. Resolves escalated issues and problems and refers new or unusual issues to a higher level. Routine contact with internal and external customers is required to obtain, clarify or provide facts and information.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review and provide feedback regarding instructors’ lesson plans
  • Create and execute daily lesson plans based on textbook curriculum as needed
  • Assist supervisor with classroom observations and skill development for other instructors
  • Plan and provide supplemental learning materials to demonstrate concepts in curriculum based on students’ needs
  • Coordinate and administer assessments and evaluations adhering to the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) standards
  • Conduct and organize student intake process at the start of each semester
  • Ensure timely data collection, create reports and answer all data/information requests with staff assistance
  • Manage routine administrative functions of the classroom including recording daily attendance, enforcing attendance policy, collecting assignments and contacting absent students and encouraging their return to class
  • Counsel students on attendance and other class related concerns
  • Hold regular office hours to be available for student questions and assistance
  • Maintain student waiting list
  • Plan and organize special presentations and events for students
  • Assist in organizing and conducting professional development workshops and training sessions for instructors
  • Conduct team meetings with ESL instructors on a regular basis
  • Oversee the ordering of materials and supplies within an assigned budget
  • Attend partner and collaboration meetings as needed
  • Participate in community outreach activities and awareness campaigns to increase recognition and participation in services offered
  • Work with supervisor to determine volunteer placement and maintenance
  • Maintain currency in ESL education techniques targeted toward adult learners
  • May teach various program classes as needed
  • May provide oversight for peers
  • Operate standard office equipment and use required software applications
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods and techniques of adult learning
  • Individual and group behavior

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications for program area and other applications, including Microsoft Office
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Design and delivery of effective lesson plans targeted to adult learners

Ability to:

  • Organize and develop instructional material and present information and material in an interesting and challenging manner
  • Plan and evaluate curriculum
  • Organize and maintain records and appropriate documentation
  • Evaluate individual and/or group instructional needs
  • Communicate sufficiently to teach adults
  • Maintain proficiency in subject matter taught
  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives
  • Incite enthusiasm and influence, motivate and persuade others to achieve desired outcomes
  • Speak and write in English
  • Interpret, speak and write in Arabic/Spanish or language of predominant service population is preferred

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Education (preferred), Business, Finance or related field
