GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Within a state hospital or inpatient medical facility, to plan, develop and direct psychology services and programs; to ensure that psychology services comply with the state and federal laws and regulations; to oversee and supervise psychology staff; to organize, coordinate and provide education and training; to oversee research or other data collecting initiatives at the hospital; to collaborate with the academic institutions in the state and develop and oversee a clinical psychology teaching program in the hospital for undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate students and fellows; to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the administrative direction of the administrator, or his/her designee for the facility with considerable latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgement; work is reviewed for professional competence and conformance to established policies, rules, and regulations.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Directs, plans, coordinates, organizes, supervises and reviews the work of clinical psychologists, behavior specialists and psychology graduate and post-graduate trainees.

Within a state hospital or inpatient medical facility, to plan, develop and direct psychology services and programs; to ensure that psychology services comply with the state and federal laws and regulations; to oversee and supervise psychology staff; to organize, coordinate and provide education and training; to oversee research or other data collecting initiatives at the hospital; to collaborate with the academic institutions in the state and develop and oversee a clinical psychology teaching program in the hospital for undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate students and fellows.
To provide clinical and administrative leadership for the psychology department.
To direct psychology services and programs, such as diagnosis, treatment, research, and education.
To coordinate and integrate resources and services in an efficient interdisciplinary model.
To participate in development of hospital policies and procedures toward providing safe, consistent, effective and quality patient care.
To collaborate with other departments and participate in hospital committees, educational programs and special task groups.
To participate in quality and utilization reviews and promote mental health advancement.
To be responsible for the psychology department policies, procedures and protocols.
To oversee and supervise psychology staff including clinical psychologists, behavior specialists, art therapists, and addiction counselors.
To conduct annual staff performance evaluations.
To be responsible for psychology staff education and training.
To ensure that proper principles and techniques of clinical psychology are applied in diagnosis and treatment.
To oversee, review and update psychology documentation records.
To oversee implementation of clinical policies, protocols and safety measures.
To be responsible for ensuring that clinical staff comply with federal and state regulations, as well as professional ethics and code of conduct.
To plan for and recruit psychology staff.
To provide consultations on difficult and complex cases involving diagnosis, treatment, and assessment with neuropsychological and personality testing.
To collaborate with the academic institutions and direct hospital's psychology teaching program for undergraduate and graduate students, interns and fellows.
To organize/participate in educational workshops, difficult case conferences and grand round.
To train and supervise students and trainees on diagnostic, treatment and research activities to psychology trainees.
To train and supervise students on administration, scoring and interpretation of a variety of intelligence, cognitive and personality tests.
To conduct clinical research in accordance with the scientific standards and federal and state regulations.
To be responsible for updating and implementing the hospital's research policy to ensure that all research performed at the hospital meets ethical, legal, and scientific standards and is conducted by appropriately qualified investigators.
To guide and supervise students in their research activities.
To maintain clinical skills through participation in continuing education and maintenance of professional license.
To do related work as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of clinical psychology, learning theory and research methodology as applied in diagnosis, treatment, education and research; a thorough knowledge of federal and state laws and related guidelines relating to clinical services; the ability to supervise the administration, scoring and interpretation of a wide variety of tests including projective and neuropsychological and personality tests; the ability to plan, direct, organize, and coordinate the work of a staff of clinicians engaged in mental and behavioral health services; the ability to develop and training for psychology staff; the ability to plan and develop a variety of treatment programs, the ability to plan and design and conduct clinical research; good communication skills and the ability to prepare written and oral reports for the administration and clinicians; the ability to establish effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and other staff; and related capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited Clinical Psychology program; and
Experience: Three years of qualified experience in practicing as a licensed psychologist, as well as experience in leadership and academic training and research.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At the time of appointment, must possess licensure as a Psychologist from the State of Rhode Island, Department of Health, and must maintain such licensure as a condition of employment.
