Job Summary
The Head Golf Coach is a full-time, twelve-month position and supervises a full time assistant coach at Morgan State University - an NCAA Division I institution. The position is responsible for overseeing all phases of the highly competitive Golf Team. The Golf team will compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The head coach must be able to support and promote the University's mission.
Job Duties
  • Provide positive guidance, specific skill instruction and concepts to the Golf student-athletes.
  • Monitor the academic progress of the Golf student-athletes and ensure the necessary support is provided as needed.
  • Lead planning meetings to strategize and coordinate practices and competition activities.
  • Promote and monitor the physical, mental, emotional and social well-being of the Golf student-athletes.
  • Manage all aspects of the Golf team budget to include coordinating team travel, meals after home competitions, apparel and footwear purchases, timely reconciliations, etc.
  • Recruit quality student-athletes to maintain preferred squad size by means of personal contact and correspondence, evaluating ability in-person and/or by video, and on-campus visits within MSU, NCAA rules.
  • Maintain a database of prospective-student-athletes including high school, junior college and transfers.
  • Respond to all inquiries received within a reasonable timeframe, preferably 24 hours.
  • Build and maintain recruiting schedules within NCAA rules.
  • Manage official and unofficial visits of prospective student-athletes, including all associated documentation.
  • Create and cultivate professional relationships within the community to build sponsorship and other fundraising opportunities.
  • Build and foster relationships with local, regional and national high schools.
  • Coordinate community service activities with MSU student-athlete development staff and MSU SAAC.
  • Plan and coordinate campus-based summer camps and clinics within NCAA guidelines.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities that will translate to growth of the Golf program.
  • Ensure compliance and sound judgment with the University's Title IX and other MSU policies and procedures. Exceptional communication, leadership, time management, and a deep understanding of golf biomechanics and sports psychology
  • Manage Morgan State University and personal student-athlete information confidentially and ethically.
  • Coordinate game day management as necessary.
  • Must be able to travel on an as needed basis.
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings (ex. rules education, academic success, head coaches, sport administrator, etc.) as requested.
  • Perform other duties, including administrative, as assigned by the head coach, sport administrator and/or the Vice President/Director of Athletics or designee.

Requested Minimum Qualifications
Education:
A Bachelor's Degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university is required.
Experience:
  • At least three years of collegiate coaching experience in Golf is required.
  • Must be certified in CPR/First Aid.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to receive Mental Health First Aid certification within one calendar year of hire date and maintain certification thereafter.
  • PGA (Professional Golfers' Association).

Other Preferences for Consideration
Preferences:
  • A Master's degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • 5 years of collegiate Golf coaching experience; NCAA Division I experience head coaching Golf
  • USGTF (United States Golf Teachers Federation).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Candidates should be able to provide instruction/feedback to student-athletes while standing or squatting while working outside.
  • Candidates must be able to bend, squat and perform other movements associated with coaching a highly competitive, golf program. Candidates should be to walk for long periods of time.
  • Candidates must be able to use a computer, laptop, telephone, golf equipment etc.
