Additive Manufacturing Engineer Remote information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Additive Manufacturing Engineer (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Additive Manufacturing Engineer (Remote), you need a strong background in engineering principles, 3D printing technologies, and materials science, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and experience with additive manufacturing systems such as FDM, SLS, or SLA, as well as familiarity with industry standards or certifications like ASTM or ISO, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective virtual communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project management. These competencies ensure the engineer can design, optimize, and deliver high-quality parts while collaborating efficiently with distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Additive Manufacturing Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Additive Manufacturing Engineers often encounter challenges related to limited hands-on access to equipment and real-time collaboration with on-site teams. To overcome these obstacles, it's important to establish clear communication channels, utilize remote monitoring tools, and coordinate closely with local operators for prototyping and testing. Regular virtual meetings and detailed documentation help ensure project timelines stay on track and technical issues are resolved efficiently. Embracing digital collaboration platforms and maintaining flexibility can significantly enhance productivity and team integration.

What does an Additive Manufacturing Engineer do when working remotely?

An Additive Manufacturing Engineer working remotely is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing 3D printing processes and products from a remote location. They collaborate with teams using digital tools to create prototypes, analyze data, and troubleshoot issues related to additive manufacturing. Remote engineers may also oversee workflow, ensure quality standards are met, and support the integration of new technologies, all while communicating with clients and colleagues virtually.

What is the difference between Additive Manufacturing Engineer Remote vs Additive Manufacturing Technician?

AspectAdditive Manufacturing Engineer RemoteAdditive Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications like AM-specific trainingTechnical diploma or associate degree, hands-on training
Work EnvironmentRemote office, design and development focusOn-site manufacturing floor, equipment operation
Industry UsageDesign, process optimization, project managementMachine setup, maintenance, part fabrication

The main difference is that Additive Manufacturing Engineers Remote focus on designing and optimizing additive processes remotely, while Additive Manufacturing Technicians work hands-on with equipment on-site. Engineers typically require higher education and perform planning tasks, whereas Technicians handle daily machine operations and maintenance.

Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt
About AMPERA

AMPERA is redefining clean, sovereign energy with compact, ultra-safe nuclear systems that power AI, industry, and defense with zero emissions and unmatched reliability. Our modular micro-reactors combine the best of fusion and fission to deliver scalable, deployable, and inherently safe energy anywhere from AI data centers to remote or defense operations.
As a fast-growing company, AMPERA blends the agility of a startup with the ambition of a global energy innovator. Joining us means becoming part of a bold mission to revolutionize how the world generates power through advanced nuclear design, next-generation manufacturing, and materials innovation.
Position Overview

We are seeking talented Fuel Fabrication Engineers to support the design, manufacturing, and qualification of AMPERAs advanced fuel systems. Working alongside the Fuel Development Lead and additive manufacturing specialists, this role will focus on TRISO particle processing, coating, and integration with Liquid Metal Jetting (LMJ) techniques.
This position combines hands-on materials engineering, process optimization, and advanced manufacturing to produce the nuclear fuel that powers AMPERAs compact micro-reactors. The ideal candidate thrives at the intersection of nuclear science and precision manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities

  • Support fabrication of TRISO-based fuel elements through advanced additive manufacturing (LMJ, powder metallurgy, sintering).
  • Prepare and handle nuclear fuel materials, coatings, and encapsulation processes in laboratory and pilot-scale settings.
  • Assist in developing fuel geometries and material specifications optimized for hybrid reactor performance.
  • Conduct process trials, data collection, and quality control on printed or fabricated fuel forms.
  • Collaborate with nuclear, materials, and mechanical engineers to improve fabrication yields and performance metrics.
  • Document process parameters, safety compliance, and test results according to QA/QC and NRC/DOE standards.
  • Participate in experimental validation, post-irradiation testing, and materials characterization.
  • Contribute to technology transfer and scale-up efforts for full production.

Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 37 years of experience in nuclear fuel fabrication, TRISO R&D, or advanced materials manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with metal and ceramic additive manufacturing, especially Liquid Metal Jetting or powder-based processes.
  • Hands-on experience with high-temperature materials, coatings, or encapsulation methods.
  • Knowledge of fuel qualification and regulatory standards (DOE, NRC).
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and teamwork skills.
  • U.S. citizenship or eligibility for security clearance may be required.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary
  • Comprehensive benefits package including healthcare, dental, vision, STD, LTD, Life/AD&D and 401(k).
  • Opportunity to pioneer advanced nuclear fuel technologies driving the next generation of clean energy.
  • Collaborative, mission-driven environment that fosters technical excellence and innovation.
  • Career advancement potential as AMPERA expands its fuel development and reactor manufacturing programs.
