What is an Ad Ops?

Ad Ops, short for Advertising Operations, refers to the team or individuals responsible for managing, implementing, and optimizing digital advertising campaigns. They ensure that ads are correctly set up, tracked, and delivered across various platforms, and troubleshoot any issues that arise during the campaign lifecycle. Ad Ops professionals work closely with sales, account management, and technical teams to maximize campaign performance and revenue. Their expertise is crucial for ensuring ads reach the right audience efficiently and meet client objectives.

How does an Ad Ops professional typically collaborate with sales and creative teams?

Ad Ops professionals work closely with sales teams to ensure that advertising campaigns are accurately set up and launched according to client requirements and timelines. They also collaborate with creative teams by providing technical specifications and deadlines for ad creatives, troubleshooting any issues that arise with assets, and ensuring creatives meet platform standards. This cross-functional collaboration is essential for delivering successful campaigns and maintaining clear communication across departments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Ad Ops professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ad Ops professional, you need a solid understanding of digital advertising platforms, campaign management, and analytics, often supported by a background in marketing or communications. Familiarity with ad servers (like Google Ad Manager), programmatic platforms, and analytics tools, as well as certifications such as Google Ads, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help you excel in managing campaigns and collaborating with clients and internal teams. These skills ensure the efficient execution, optimization, and reporting of ad campaigns, directly impacting revenue and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Ad Ops vs Media Buyer?

Strengthening and empowering all of the communities we serve.

Adpearance is a Portland-based, results-driven digital marketing agency that helps businesses to generate the most quality leads possible. We’re well known as the best in automotive and are successfully expanding to more verticals, too. Adpearance is part of Advance Automotive, comprised of a portfolio of SaaS, data, and marketing solutions built for automotive manufacturers and dealers. To learn more about our entire portfolio of automotive brands, visit www.advanceautomotive.ai.

We are hiring for a Director, Digital Strategy – Full-Service, where you will lead a team of experienced Digital Strategists in delivering high-impact marketing and advertising services to some of our most complex and high-value clients across a variety of industries, including capital equipment, home services, hospitality, office equipment, law, and insurance. This role is both strategic and hands-on. You will own a small portfolio of key accounts while also managing a small team of senior Digital Strategists. You’ll set the bar for strategy, communication, and service delivery — and act as the senior resource for clients and team members alike. Your mission is to ensure client satisfaction, deliver measurable results, and help grow account revenue. You’ll collaborate closely with Advertising, Web, and Product teams to improve processes, drive efficiencies, and scale best practices across the Full-Service team.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Full-Service Digital Strategy team, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and career development.
  • Establish team-wide structures, operating rhythms, and technical standards that promote consistent, high-quality work.
  • Guide the team in client prep, consulting best practices, and growth/churn analysis.
  • Be the team’s strategic anchor — offering support, elevating skills, and setting expectations for client success.
  • Step in to support team members in challenging client intersections, upsell, and retention client conversations.

Strategic Client Ownership

  • Own 1–3 complex, high-value client relationships — serving as the primary strategic lead.
  • Develop and present data-backed recommendations aligned with business goals and marketing best practices.
  • Manage services, timelines, and communication in a way that anticipates client needs and exceeds expectations.

Service Oversight & Delivery

  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., developers, designers, SEO, ad ops) to ensure that deliverables meet both quality standards and business outcomes.
  • Oversee client strategies and campaign performance across the Full-Service team, ensuring each engagement is grounded in business insight and aligned to KPIs.
  • Step in to support team members on technical questions, strategy validation, or escalation scenarios.
  • Build and/or refine internal systems, processes, and documentation to drive efficiency, visibility, and scalability across the team.
  • Ensure team strategies evolve in line with industry trends and platform changes.
  • Act as a connector between the Full-Service team and other departments — making sure internal handoffs are smooth and client goals remain front and center.

What Success Looks Like:

  • High client retention and satisfaction across your team’s portfolio.
  • Revenue growth driven by strategic upselling and service expansion.
  • Team members are growing, performing, and consistently delivering on their KPIs.
  • Clients and internal stakeholders see you as a strategic thought partner and trusted operator.

What You Bring:

  • Leadership with follow-through: You know how to build trust, provide clear direction, and hold people accountable — all while supporting their growth.
  • Strategic depth: You’re confident consulting with executives, distilling complex ideas, and making data-driven recommendations.
  • Digital marketing fluency: Strong knowledge of SEM, SEO, analytics, and modern web strategy.
  • Client-first mindset: You anticipate needs, solve problems proactively, and keep communication sharp and transparent.
  • Process orientation: You thrive in a dynamic environment by staying organized and building processes that scale.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 8 years in digital strategy, account management, or client services.
  • Minimum 3 years leading or managing teams.
  • Experience working directly with digital platforms (e.g., Google Ads, GA, Meta).
  • Strong attention to detail and process-oriented mindset.
  • Strong communicator, collaborator, and systems thinker.
  • Occasional domestic travel for client or partner meetings (approx. 3–5 times/year).
  • Hybrid role in Portland preferred (2–3 days in-office/week, particularly during onboarding and collaboration periods). Remote candidates also considered.
