Job description

Location: Hybrid, Beverly, MA (or as applicable)
Reports To: Associate Director of Operations

About the Role

We are seeking a highly organized and analytical Operations Manager to oversee the day-to-day execution of our U.S. supply chain and business operations. This role is responsible for managing logistics, transportation, imports and exports, third-party distribution partners, operational reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives that ensure products move efficiently through our supply chain.

The ideal candidate combines strong operational experience with a data-driven mindset and the ability to translate complex information into actionable recommendations. This position works closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to support the timely, accurate, and cost-effective flow of products from suppliers to customers.

What You'll DoLogistics, Traffic, Import & Export Operations
  • Manage domestic and international inbound and outbound logistics activities across printers, suppliers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, carriers, ports, rail providers, and third-party distribution partners.
  • Monitor shipments from supplier pickup through warehouse receipt, ensuring delivery schedules and operational milestones are met.
  • Oversee import/export, transportation, customs, and regulatory documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Track transportation and warehouse performance, including receiving, inventory transfers, fulfillment, delivery timelines, service exceptions, and related costs.
  • Investigate and resolve logistics issues, escalating significant risks as needed.
  • Review freight costs, invoice discrepancies, claims, recoveries, and vendor performance to identify service and cost-saving opportunities.
Reporting, Analytics & Performance Management
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, scorecards, and operational reports for transportation, warehousing, distribution, and inventory activities.
  • Analyze key performance indicators, including:
    • On-time pickup and delivery
    • Shipment lead times
    • Port and rail dwell times
    • Warehouse receiving performance
    • Order cycle times
    • Fill rates
    • Freight costs
    • Inventory exceptions
    • Claims and damages
    • Third-party logistics performance
  • Identify trends, root causes, and improvement opportunities and present recommendations to leadership.
  • Conduct ad hoc analyses and scenario modeling to support inventory, production, freight, and distribution decisions.
  • Improve reporting accuracy and efficiency through automation, standardization, and enhanced data controls.
Process Improvement & Cross-Functional Support
  • Implement approved operational policies, procedures, controls, and system enhancements.
  • Create and maintain process documentation, standard operating procedures, training guides, and process maps.
  • Monitor corrective action plans and ensure improvements deliver measurable results.
  • Support carrier, warehouse, broker, and supplier performance reviews through data analysis and reporting.
  • Assist with vendor evaluations, requests for proposal (RFPs), and contract discussions.
  • Troubleshoot operational challenges and recommend sustainable solutions.
Team Leadership
  • Supervise and prioritize the work of the Business Operations & Analytics function and other assigned support staff.
  • Provide coaching, training, performance feedback, and professional development support.
  • Establish clear expectations for quality, timeliness, accountability, and service.
  • Ensure appropriate cross-training, documentation, and operational coverage across critical functions.
  • Support departmental projects and other initiatives as assigned.
What You'll BringRequired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, Operations, Analytics, Engineering, Technology, or a related discipline; equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in logistics, supply chain, distribution, imports/exports, business operations, or operational analytics.
  • Previous supervisory, team lead, or staff management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation, traffic management, import/export processes, customs requirements, warehousing, third-party logistics, and distribution operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage detailed, deadline-driven workflows and resolve operational issues effectively.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong proficiency with reporting, ERP, business intelligence, or workflow automation tools.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across teams.
  • Continuous improvement mindset and exceptional attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience within publishing, printing, book distribution, or consumer products industries.
  • Experience working with transportation management, ERP, business intelligence, or warehouse management systems.
  • Familiarity with process improvement methodologies and operational optimization initiatives.
