Accounting Manager
Position Summary
The Accounting Manager oversees core general ledger activities and key aspects of the close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP and company policies. This role is responsible for maintaining a strong internal control environment, partners cross-functionally, and drives process improvements that enhance accuracy and efficiency. The position requires an action-oriented, forward-thinking strategic mindset, with the ability to proactively identify issues and drive effective solutions. Reporting to the Accounting Director, this hybrid Boston-based role directly supervises up to three Senior Accountants.
About the Team
The General Ledger Accounting team is an integral part of athenahealth's Controllership organization, working closely with AP, Procurement, Technical Accounting, FP&A, and IT to support the systems, processes, and controls that enable accurate and reliable financial reporting. This team leads the close process, partners across the organization, and drives continuous improvement to enhance accounting operations and efficiency. Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Lead portions of the monthly close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Review journal entries, account recs, and financial analyses to maintain accuracy and compliance with US GAAP.
  • Evaluate financial risks and internal controls, and recommend improvements to strengthen control effectiveness and operational reliability.
  • Document accounting processes and maintain organized support for key judgments and conclusions.
  • Analyze accounting data and reporting trends to identify issues, inform decisions, and support process improvements.
  • Assist with external audit requests and internal compliance activities.
  • Manage and develop team members by setting clear expectations, supporting prioritization, and providing ongoing coaching and feedback.
  • Communicate accounting matters clearly to varied audiences, tailoring detail and context to business needs.

Additional Job Responsibilities
  • Assist with hiring and training of new employees.
  • Prepare ad hoc analyses and management reporting as needed.
  • Contribute to special projects related to systems, automation, and reporting enhancements.

Expected Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in accounting, with 3+ years of public accounting experience.
  • People leadership experience required.
  • Experience supporting financial close, reconciliations, audit activity, and financial reporting processes preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and practical application of US GAAP.
  • Comprehensive understanding of financial risks and internal controls.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Oracle or equivalent ERP and strong analytical capabilities.

Expected Compensation
$93,000 - $159,000
The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
