POSITION DETAILS:
Job Title: Group Exercise Instructor
Status: Part Time Non-Exempt
Department: Wellness
Reports to: Director of Healthy Living
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Group Exercise Instructor plays a vital role in advancing the YMCA's mission of strengthening
community by connecting people to their potential, purpose, and one another. This position leads dynamic,
inclusive, and safe group fitness classes that promote wellness, confidence, and social connection. Through
positive encouragement and skillful instruction, the instructor helps participants of all fitness levels feel
successful and supported. Guided by the YMCA's core values-Caring, Honesty, Respect, and
Responsibility-we foster a culture that is Welcoming, Genuine, Hopeful, Nurturing, and
Determined.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Lead energizing, safe, and engaging group exercise classes for a variety of ages and ability levels.
  2. Modify and adapt instruction to support participants' goals, needs, and limitations.
  3. Build authentic relationships that foster community, motivation, and trust.
  4. Provide clear guidance on form, technique, and proper equipment use.
  5. Stay current on fitness trends, best practices, and YMCA expectations.
  6. Record class attendance and communicate regularly with the Wellness team.
  7. Keep spaces clean and organized; report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  8. Uphold YMCA policies and represent the organization with professionalism, integrity, and respect.
  9. Attend required trainings and actively contribute to staff meetings or wellness events.
  10. Model YMCA core values and use the Y-Voice: Welcoming, Hopeful. Determined, Genuine, and Nurturing.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the YMCA's mission and strategic goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Nationally recognized group exercise certification (e.g., ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) or YMCA Group Exercise Certification preferred.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Strong communication and motivational skills.
  • Prior experience leading group exercise classes preferred.
  • Demonstrates ability to adapt instruction to diverse needs and fitness levels.
  • Understands that the YMCA is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).


REQUIRED TRAINING AND CERTIFICATIONS:
(or willingness to complete within designated timeframe upon hire)

  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training (or equivalent approved by the YMCA)
  • Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Certification
  • Emergency Procedures Training
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Nationally recognized Group Exercise certification


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lead and demonstrate fitness routines for extended periods.
  • Regular standing, bending, stretching, and movement required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. using proper technique.
  • Exposure to music, high-energy environments, and active groups.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
