What is Active 911?

Active 911 is a digital dispatching system and mobile app that provides emergency responders with real-time alerts, mapping, and communication tools. It is commonly used by fire departments, EMS, and other first responders to receive call information, track apparatus, and coordinate responses efficiently. The platform integrates with dispatch centers to send notifications directly to responders’ smartphones or other devices, helping to improve response times and situational awareness. Active 911 also offers features like GPS tracking, incident management, and messaging to streamline emergency operations.

What does an Active 911 dispatcher do?

Active 911 Dispatchers frequently encounter high-pressure scenarios where quick thinking and clear communication are crucial. They are trained to prioritize incoming calls, remain calm under stress, and relay accurate information to first responders. Collaboration with police, fire, and EMS teams is essential, requiring dispatchers to coordinate resources efficiently and provide real-time updates. Support from experienced colleagues and structured shift rotations help manage the demands of the role and reduce burnout.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an Active 911 dispatcher?

To excel as an Emergency Dispatcher using Active911, you need strong multitasking abilities, situational awareness, and a background in emergency communications or public safety dispatch, often supported by relevant certifications like APCO or NENA. Familiarity with computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, radio communication tools, and the Active911 platform is typically required. Excellent communication skills, emotional resilience, and the capacity to remain calm under pressure are critical soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure rapid, accurate response coordination and effective support for first responders in high-stress emergency situations.
