JOB SUMMARY:

Under specific/routine supervision, the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Club/DI sports will assist the Head Athletic Trainer with clinic coverage of men's and women's club sport programs and select game coverage for Hockey and Rugby teams. Also, DI sport team coverage as assigned by the Head ATC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide coverage at assigned games (Club and DI) and practice sessions (DI).
  • Serve as primary ATC for men's and women's rugby and men's and women's ACHA hockey.
  • Provide clinic coverage at specified times in the Kiernan Recreation Center for club sports and in the office of Sports Medicine for DI teams
  • Provide quality care for athletic injuries including evaluation, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and related illness;
  • Document injuries;
  • Responsible for coordinating all clinic visits, as well as referrals and treatments.
  • Process insurance claims;
  • Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material, should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  • Working in conjunction with the NU Sports Medicine program, the athletic trainer will be responsible for overseeing the comprehensive concussion management program for the club sport participants/DI student-athletes utilizing SWAY. The program focuses on prevention, education, management and a proper return to play (RTP) protocol.
  • When scheduled/referred in the Kiernan Recreation Center, athletic trainer services will be available for students to include all club sport participants, members of cheerleading and for DI student-athletes (sports medicine clinic).
  • Athletic trainer is responsible for the operation of treatment areas at practice, game and office sites. Athletic trainer must ensure appropriate supplies are available in treatment areas as well as keeping treatment areas clean and organized.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other administrative duties as they arise.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

% of Time

45% Provides coverage for the club sports program at assigned games; provides quality care for athletic injuries including evaluation, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and related illnesses. Implementation of comprehensive concussion management program.

35% Provides coverage for assigned DI sports program at assigned games and practices; assists with oversight of work-study students and/or student intern athletics trainer(s); provides quality care for athletic injuries including evaluation, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and related illnesses. Implementation of comprehensive concussion management program.

10% Communicates with Head Coaches, and Director of Recreation & Club Sports of assigned programs in regards to injuries, rehabilitation and return to play protocol.

10% Documents injuries; processes insurance claims; works with NU Drug and Alcohol Education and testing programs; performs other administrative duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1) Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary.

2) Strong organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

3) Ability to perform athletic training skills for men's and women's intercollegiate athletic program.

4) Knowledge of techniques for caring for injuries, rehabilitation, and prevention.

5) Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone.

6) Ability to travel.

7) Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business.

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:

The functions of the position usually performed standing, but may require some amount of time sitting. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. This position requires some traveling. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, wrapping, taping, labeling, and cutting and involve extensive wrist and hand movement. This position requires some traveling. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

  • Master's degree in athletic training or related field required.
  • NATA certification required.
  • NYS Licensure or ability to gain Licensure within the first year of employment.
  • American Red Cross CPR/FA instructor preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required. License must meet insurance company rules and regulations for driving underwriting criteria.
