What is an accounting associate internship?

An Accounting Associate Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in accounting. Interns typically assist with tasks such as bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, data entry, and supporting audits under the supervision of experienced accountants. This role provides hands-on exposure to accounting software, financial procedures, and workplace operations, helping interns build foundational skills for a future career in accounting. Most internships last a few months and may be paid or unpaid, depending on the company.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an accounting associate internship?

As an Accounting Associate Intern, you will typically assist with a variety of essential accounting functions, such as preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, processing invoices, and supporting month-end or year-end closing activities. You may also help with data entry, generating financial reports, and assisting with audits under the supervision of senior accountants. This role often involves collaborating with different departments to ensure accurate financial documentation and may provide exposure to accounting software and systems, giving you practical experience in a real-world business environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accounting associate intern, and why are they important?

Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Excel, and ERP systems, along with basic knowledge of GAAP, is typically required. Strong organizational skills, time management, and effective communication help interns adapt quickly and collaborate with team members. These skills and qualities ensure accuracy, efficiency, and reliability in supporting financial operations and learning in a professional environment.

Associate Underwriter | Brookfield, WI | Hybrid Once Fully Trained

About Us

At Old Republic Surety, we do more than underwrite bonds—we build relationships, solve complex challenges, and help contractors move their businesses forward. As an Associate Underwriter, you’ll join a team that provides contract, fidelity, and commercial surety solutions through a nationwide network of more than 4,500 independent insurance agencies. Based in Brookfield, WI, the Associate Underwriter will have the opportunity to develop a rewarding career in the surety industry while working alongside experienced professionals who value collaboration, creativity, and exceptional service. The Associate Underwriter role offers a structured path to grow your underwriting expertise and make a meaningful impact on our business.

Experience

The Associate Underwriter participates in hands-on training designed to build expertise in surety, construction accounting, legal documents, risk analysis, and underwriting practices. As an Associate Underwriter, you’ll evaluate bond submissions, review credit reports and references, assess risk, and make approval or declination decisions within established authority. You’ll work closely with branch personnel, agents, and management to gather and analyze account information, maintain accurate underwriting files, and support business growth across your territory.

The Associate Underwriter will also have opportunities to travel with branch leadership, visit agents and customers, attend industry events, and participate in learning and development sessions across the country. Success as an Associate Underwriter requires curiosity, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a desire to continuously build expertise. A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Construction Management/Technology, or a related field is preferred, along with internship experience in financial services.

Benefits

As an Associate Underwriter, you’ll receive a competitive salary of $65,000–$70,000, commensurate with experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your financial security, health, and work-life balance.

  • Financial: Competitive salary, 401(k) Savings & Profit-Sharing Plan with company match, Roth investment options, 529 Education Savings Plan, and Employee Referral Bonus Program.
  • Health & Wellness: Health, dental, vision, life, supplemental life, and long-term disability insurance, plus FSA and HSA options, paid leave benefits, accident and critical illness insurance, and pet insurance.
  • Work-Life Balance: 37.5-hour standard work week, generous PTO, paid holidays, hybrid work opportunities once fully trained, casual business attire, volunteer opportunities, and company-sponsored events and outings.
