Key responsibilities

  • Prepare and post routine journal entries to the general ledger with proper supporting documentation and account coding.

  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, including reviewing invoices, receipts, and transactions for accuracy and proper coding.

Job description

About the Role
PeopleLift is recruiting on behalf of one of Puerto Rico's leading hospitals - a nationally recognized healthcare institution in the San Juan metro area, known for clinical excellence and a long-standing commitment to the communities it serves. The client name is disclosed to candidates at the first interview.
They are hiring a Junior Accountant for their Finance team. This is an entry-level, full-time, first-shift, on-site position built for a recent Accounting graduate or an early-career professional who wants to build a career in healthcare finance. You will work directly with the Accounting Manager, who will train you on the general ledger, the monthly close, and the reporting standards of a regulated healthcare environment.
If you have a strong foundation in accounting principles and you are looking for the seat where you learn to apply them, this is that seat.
What You Will Own
  • Prepare and post routine journal entries to the general ledger, with proper supporting documentation and correct account coding.
  • Reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts monthly - cash, prepaid expenses, accruals, and clearing accounts - and escalate unresolved reconciling items to the Accounting Manager on a timely basis.
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable, including reviewing invoices, receipts, and transactions for accuracy, proper coding, and required approvals, and assisting with routine vendor and payer inquiries.
  • Prepare recurring close and audit schedules from established templates, and maintain complete, organized, audit-ready workpaper files.
  • Meet assigned deadlines within the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close calendar.

What You Will Support
Performed under the direct supervision of the Accounting Manager, with responsibility expected to broaden as you demonstrate proficiency:
  • Maintenance of fixed asset records - additions, disposals, and depreciation schedules.
  • Compilation of data used in financial statements, variance analyses, and management reporting packages.
  • Preparation of tax filings and government reports, in coordination with internal and external partners.
  • Compilation of data for the annual budget and periodic forecasting processes.
  • Documenting accounting procedures and identifying opportunities to strengthen accuracy and internal controls.
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of financial, patient, and employee information in accordance with organizational policy and applicable law, including HIPAA.

What You Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • 3+ years of accounting, bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, or accounting internship experience. Relevant internship or academic practicum experience will be considered.
  • Foundational knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); academic coursework is acceptable.
  • Working proficiency with Microsoft Excel - sorting, filtering, and basic formulas - with a willingness to develop proficiency in lookups and pivot tables.
  • Full professional proficiency in Spanish, and functional written and verbal English. The Finance team, vendors, and internal departments operate primarily in Spanish; accounting system documentation, payer correspondence, and external partner communication are frequently in English. Both are required to perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail, the ability to follow established procedures, and the judgment to raise questions rather than assume.
  • Ability to work on-site in the San Juan metro area on a first-shift schedule.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.

Nice to Have
These are preferences, not requirements. Candidates who meet the requirements above are encouraged to apply.
  • Coursework, internship, or work exposure in a hospital, healthcare, or other regulated industry setting.
  • Familiarity with an ERP or general ledger accounting system.
  • Coursework or internship exposure to external audit procedures.
  • Active progress toward CPA certification, or the intention to pursue it.
  • Basic familiarity with healthcare revenue cycle concepts or third-party payor billing.
  • Strong written English in addition to Spanish.

Growth and Development
This position is structured as an entry point into the hospital's Finance organization. The Junior Accountant works directly with the Accounting Manager and receives hands-on training in general ledger accounting, the close calendar, audit preparation, and healthcare-specific reporting requirements. Demonstrated proficiency opens a path toward a Staff Accountant role.
Schedule and Overtime
  • First shift, Monday through Friday, standard business hours. No rotating or weekend requirement.
  • Occasional extended hours may be required during month-end close, year-end close, audit periods, and budget season.
  • This position is classified as non-exempt. All overtime is compensated in accordance with applicable Puerto Rico law, including premium pay for hours worked in excess of eight (8) hours in a workday.

Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications. The benefits package includes:
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Employer contribution toward healthcare coverage
  • Paid holidays
  • 15 days of paid vacation annually - above the statutory accrual schedule
  • 12 days of paid sick leave annually
  • Christmas bonus in accordance with Puerto Rico law (Ley Núm. 148 de 1969)
  • Direct mentorship from the Accounting Manager and a defined development path within a leading healthcare organization

Benefit eligibility, accrual schedules, and waiting periods are governed by plan documents and organizational policy.
Working Conditions
This position is performed on-site in a professional office environment within a hospital facility. It involves remaining in a stationary position for extended periods while working at a computer, operating standard office equipment, communicating and exchanging accurate information with colleagues in person, by telephone, and in writing, occasionally moving about the facility to attend meetings and access records, and occasionally lifting or moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
Conditions of Employment
After a conditional offer of employment, this position requires a background check appropriate to the role and to hospital site-access requirements, and health screening or immunization documentation where required by the facility, by contract, or by law. Criminal history, where considered, is assessed individually - the nature and gravity of the offense, the time elapsed, and its relationship to the duties of this position; a criminal record does not automatically disqualify an applicant.
How to Apply
Apply directly through this posting with a current resume. All applications are reviewed confidentially. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. We do not ask for salary history at any stage of the hiring process; you may be asked about your compensation expectations.
