What does an accountant hourly do?

An Accountant Hourly is a financial professional who works on an hourly basis to handle accounting tasks such as preparing financial statements, managing accounts payable and receivable, reconciling bank statements, and ensuring accuracy in financial records. Their duties may also include assisting with tax preparation, budgeting, and compliance with financial regulations. Hiring an hourly accountant can be cost-effective for businesses or individuals who need occasional or project-based accounting support rather than full-time assistance.

What types of projects or clients do hourly accountants typically work with, and how does this impact their daily workflow?

Hourly accountants often work with a range of clients, from small businesses needing help with bookkeeping to larger organizations seeking assistance during peak periods like tax season. This variety means daily tasks can include everything from reconciling accounts and preparing financial statements to supporting payroll and tax filings. The work environment is usually dynamic, requiring adaptability and strong communication skills to collaborate with different clients and team members. Working hourly also allows for flexibility, but it may involve managing multiple deadlines and shifting priorities based on client needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accountant hourly, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accountant Hourly, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and typically a degree in accounting or related field. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Excel, and knowledge of ERP systems or certifications like CPA are highly valuable. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial records, compliance, and efficient support for clients or organizational finance teams.

What is the difference between Accountant Hourly vs Bookkeeper Hourly?

Job description

Position Purpose

The Senior Accountant is responsible for providing full-service accounting support for an assigned portfolio of clients. Depending on the size and complexity of each engagement, responsibilities range from owning specific areas of the month-end close process for larger clients to independently managing the full accounting cycle and preparing monthly financial statements for smaller clients.

This role provides the opportunity to work with organizations across multiple industries while developing broad accounting experience, building meaningful client relationships, and taking ownership of the monthly accounting process. Unlike traditional corporate accounting roles that focus on a single company or function, our accountants gain experience across a variety of organizations, systems, and accounting challenges.

The Senior Accountant reports to an Accounting Manager or Senior Accounting Manager and works collaboratively within a team-focused environment.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
Strong understanding of GAAP and month-end close processes.
Experience preparing balance sheet reconciliations.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, and standard formulas).
Experience with accounting software.
Ability to manage multiple clients and competing deadlines effectively.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrates professionalism, discretion, and accountability.

Essential Functions

Manage accounting responsibilities for an assigned portfolio of clients, with responsibility levels varying based on client size and complexity.
Serve as the primary day-to-day accounting contact for assigned clients.
Participate in and execute monthly and year-end close processes for assigned clients, including independently managing the complete close process for smaller client engagements.
Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
Record general ledger transactions and prepare recurring and adjusting journal entries, including accruals, prepaids, payroll entries, and fixed assets.
Reconcile bank and credit card accounts.
