Account Development information

What is account development?

Account Development is a role within sales and business development focused on identifying, nurturing, and qualifying potential customers or accounts for a company. Professionals in this position often research prospects, initiate contact, and build relationships to create new business opportunities. They work closely with sales teams to ensure leads are properly managed and handed off for further engagement. The goal is to expand the customer base and drive revenue growth by finding and developing new accounts.

How does the account development role typically collaborate with sales and marketing teams?

Account Development professionals work closely with both sales and marketing teams to identify and nurture potential clients. They often act as a bridge, leveraging marketing-generated leads, qualifying prospects, and then passing high-quality opportunities to the sales team for closing. This role requires strong communication and organizational skills, as regular meetings and strategy sessions with both teams are common. Collaborating effectively ensures a seamless pipeline and helps align messaging, improving the chances of converting leads into long-term customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an account development professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Account Development professional, you need strong sales acumen, lead generation expertise, and typically a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, sales automation tools, and data analytics platforms is highly valued. Exceptional communication, active listening, and resilience are crucial soft skills for building client relationships and overcoming objections. These abilities drive revenue growth and ensure sustained success in competitive sales environments.

What is the difference between Account Development vs Sales Representative?

AspectAccount DevelopmentSales Representative

Work EnvironmentCollaborative, strategic, often involves account managementTarget-driven, transactional, field or office-based
Required CredentialsTypically a bachelor’s degree, experience in sales or account managementOften a bachelor’s degree, sales training or certification beneficial
Industry UsageCommon in B2B sectors like tech, finance, and consultingWidely used across retail, tech, and service industries

While both roles involve sales activities, Account Development focuses on cultivating existing client relationships and expanding accounts, whereas Sales Representatives primarily aim to acquire new customers and close sales. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or hiring the appropriate role for business growth.

What does an account development do?

An account development professional focuses on building and maintaining relationships with existing clients to increase sales and customer retention. They identify opportunities for growth, coordinate with sales and marketing teams, and often use CRM tools to manage client accounts. Strong communication and strategic planning skills are essential in this role.

Job description

About PistonPay

PistonPay is a payments company starting by revolutionizing how fleets manage their fuel payments. We're a Series A company backed by some of the best investors in the world, including Pear, Spark, and FPV (the same firms behind Anthropic, Dropbox, DoorDash, and Canva). We're building the financial backbone for the trucks and fleets that move the economy, and we're just getting started.

Role overview

We're hiring an Account Representative to own outbound across the broader ground contractor network: building pipeline and relationships beyond any single gas station, including referral and network-level introductions across the contractor community. You'll be the first conversation a prospect has with PistonPay, prospecting into accounts, qualifying inbound interest, demoing and closing deals. This is a builder's role centered on compounding relationships, not just one-off dials.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prospect across the Ground contractor network through a disciplined mix of cold calls, cold email, and LinkedIn outreach, sustaining a high-volume, high-quality outbound motion (100+ calls per day).
  • Qualify inbound leads against our ideal customer profile and convert qualified conversations into booked discovery calls.
  • Build network-level relationships and referral pathways that compound pipeline over time.
  • Partner with marketing on campaign development, messaging testing, and ongoing refinement of the network ideal customer profile.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records in Salesforce and Outreach, and bring a clear point of view on what messaging and tactics are working.
  • Travel occasionally (2 - 3 day) to support in-market pushes and events.
What Success Looks Like

In the first 30 days:

  • You have completed onboarding and have a working knowledge of PistonPay's product, ICP, and the contractor network.
  • You are comfortable with our tech stack (Salesforce, Outreach, Slack, G-Suite) and running a full daily outbound cadence.
  • You have made your first calls and sent your first sequences, and are actively building pipeline and early network relationships.
  • You have closed your first deals.

In the first 90 days:

  • You are consistently hitting daily and weekly activity targets (100+ calls/day) and booking a steady, predictable volume of qualified meetings.
  • You have built early referral pathways and network relationships that are starting to compound into pipeline.
  • Actively shaping campaigns and ICP refinement rather than just executing them.
  • You have helped document or improve the network outbound playbook.
Qualifications & Requirements

Must-have:

  • A genuine desire to build a long-term career in sales. This is a launchpad role, not a stopgap.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive on a high-volume outbound cadence (100+ dials/day) and work cross-functionally with marketing, SDRs, and leadership.
  • Coachable, competitive, and energized by building something from the ground up.

Nice-to-have:

  • Prior SDR, BDR, or summer sales experience.
  • Door-to-door sales experience.
  • Competitive athletics or sports background.
  • Immersive, high-discipline experience such as a religious mission, military service, or similar.
  • Curiosity about or prior exposure to fintech, payments, or trucking/logistics.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, Outreach, Slack, or G-Suite.
Reporting Structure

This role reports to Sales Leadership, with close day-to-day collaboration alongside our Account Executive(s) and Marketing team. You'll have direct input into how the AE function is structured and run as we scale.

Compensation & Benefits
  • $65,000 OTE
  • Meaningful early-stage equity
  • Medical insurance
  • All hardware and software needed to do your best work
  • A front-row seat to building a category-defining payments company from its earliest days
Working Conditions

This is a full-time, on-site role based in our Lehi, Utah office, five days per week. The role is phone- and computer-intensive, with sustained daily outbound calling (100+ calls/day) as a core, non-negotiable function of the job. Occasional travel is required to support market pushes and events.
