What is accessioning?

Accessioning refers to the process of formally receiving, cataloging, and recording items—such as specimens, documents, or artifacts—into a collection or database. This process is common in fields like medical laboratories, museums, archives, and libraries. In a laboratory, accessioning involves logging and labeling incoming samples to ensure accurate tracking and identification throughout testing. Proper accessioning helps maintain data integrity, supports efficient workflow, and reduces the risk of errors. It is a critical step for organizational and legal compliance.

What are some common challenges faced in an accessioning role, and how can they be effectively managed?

Accessioning professionals often work in fast-paced environments where they handle high volumes of samples or records, requiring exceptional attention to detail to prevent errors. Common challenges include managing tight deadlines, ensuring accurate data entry, and maintaining proper labeling and documentation to support downstream processes. Effective organization, clear communication with laboratory or archival staff, and adherence to standardized protocols can help address these challenges. Many teams also rely on digital tracking systems to streamline workflow and reduce manual mistakes, so being comfortable with technology is an advantage.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accessioning specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessioning Specialist, you need attention to detail, organizational skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles preferring experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), barcode scanners, and specimen tracking software is essential. Strong communication, time management, and the ability to work accurately under pressure are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precise specimen handling, efficient workflow, and the integrity of laboratory results critical to patient care.

To become a lab accessioner, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with attention to detail and organizational skills. Some positions may require familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and basic computer skills.
