What are Accessibility Designers?

Accessibility Designers are professionals who ensure that digital products, environments, or services are usable by people of all abilities, including those with disabilities. They focus on designing interfaces, content, and experiences that accommodate a wide range of needs, such as visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive differences. Their work often involves collaborating with developers, UX/UI designers, and stakeholders to implement accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). By prioritizing accessibility, they help create inclusive products that provide equal access and usability for everyone.

While both roles focus on accessibility, an Accessibility Designer primarily creates accessible digital experiences through design and UX principles. An Accessibility Specialist concentrates on testing, compliance, and ensuring existing products meet accessibility standards. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of the accessibility process.

How does an Accessibility Designer typically collaborate with developers and product teams during a project?

Accessibility Designers work closely with developers and product teams throughout the design and development lifecycle. They provide guidelines, review design prototypes for accessibility compliance, and offer feedback to ensure inclusive user experiences. Regular meetings and collaborative workshops are common, allowing Accessibility Designers to address potential barriers early and suggest practical solutions. This role often involves advocating for accessibility best practices and educating team members on emerging standards and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accessibility Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility Designer, you need expertise in inclusive design principles, a solid understanding of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), and experience with web or app development. Familiarity with accessibility testing tools, screen readers, and certifications like CPACC or WAS are often required. Strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help you advocate for users with disabilities and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure digital products are usable for everyone and comply with legal accessibility requirements.

Job description

About Tava
If you could spend your time doing something truly meaningful, chances are you’d choose work that could change people's lives for the better. At Tava Health, that's exactly what we do every day. Tava Health is a quickly growing venture-backed startup, focused on scaling access to behavioral healthcare.

We make meaningful connections between providers and clients accessible and easy by partnering with organizations to bring high-quality mental health care to their employees, members, and communities.

About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Product Designer to lead the design of our patient-facing product experiences. This role will focus on creating intuitive, accessible designs for patient conversion flows, scheduling, payments, and the in-session telehealth experience. You will play a critical role in building a high quality experience that will shape how individuals access therapy at Tava Health.

Key Responsibilities

  • User-Centered Design Excellence

    • Create seamless, intuitive experiences across the patient journey: onboarding, provider matching, appointment booking, billing, and telehealth sessions.

    • Design solutions that remove friction and increase patient engagement with mental health services.

    • Accommodate multiple payment and coverage scenarios in a unified, elegant experience.

    • Ability to craft multiple problem-led solutions for any request.

  • Design Systems & Craft

    • Build and maintain scalable design systems that ensure consistency and quality.

    • Balance speed with craft. Ship polished work quickly without sacrificing user experience.

    • Conduct user research and usability testing to validate design decisions.

    • Partner closely with engineering to ensure high-fidelity implementation.

  • Innovation & AI Integration

    • Incorporate AI tools into your design process for faster iteration and exploration.

    • Identify opportunities where AI can enhance patient matching, personalization, and overall experience.

  • Cross-Functional Leadership

    • Take full ownership of design outcomes and balance user needs with business goals.

    • Navigate ambiguity and competing priorities with confidence and clear communication.

    • Present design work to leadership with strong rationale and strategic alignment.

    • Foster collaborative relationships across disciplines while articulating solutions for the ideal design direction.

Qualifications:

  • Startup mentality: self-directed, adaptable, and comfortable finding solutions in ambiguity.

  • 5+ years of product design experience with a portfolio showcasing consumer digital products.

  • Deep understanding of conversion funnels, payment experiences, and user psychology.

  • Track record of shipping polished designs in resource-constrained, high-velocity environments.

  • Proficiency with modern design tools (Figma, FullStory, etc.) and willingness to experiment with AI-assisted workflows.

  • Strong communicator who thrives working alongside product managers, engineers, and stakeholders.

  • Bonus: Experience in healthcare, telehealth, or regulated industries.

Why You’ll Love Working at Tava:

  • Competitive salary and stock options (so you share in the company’s success).

  • Fully-covered medical and dental premiums for you and your family, plus voluntary insurance options.

  • Free, generous Tava mental health benefit — of course!

  • Monthly HSA contributions for qualifying enrolled employees.

  • Generous PTO and paid holidays.

  • Paid parental leave.

  • 401(k) retirement plan.

  • Weekly company-paid lunch via DoorDash and a personal DashPass subscription.

  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact at a high-growth, mission-driven company.
