What is an accessibility architect?

Accessibility Architects are professionals who design and implement digital products, environments, or systems to ensure they are usable by people of all abilities, including those with disabilities. They work to integrate accessibility standards and best practices into the design and development process, often collaborating with designers, developers, and stakeholders. Their goal is to create inclusive experiences that comply with legal requirements such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an accessibility architect?

To thrive as an Accessibility Architect, you need expertise in accessibility standards (such as WCAG), user experience design, and web development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with assistive technologies, accessibility testing tools (like Axe or WAVE), and certifications such as CPACC or WAS are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and advocacy skills help you collaborate across teams and champion inclusive design. These competencies ensure digital products are usable by all, meet legal requirements, and provide an equitable experience for diverse users.

How does an accessibility architect typically collaborate with designers and developers during a project's lifecycle?

An Accessibility Architect works closely with both designers and developers from the early stages of a project to ensure accessibility is integrated into every phase. They review design mockups for accessibility considerations, provide guidance on inclusive user flows, and collaborate with developers to ensure code meets accessibility standards like WCAG. Regular communication and hands-on support are key, including conducting accessibility audits, providing feedback, and offering training sessions to upskill team members. This collaborative approach helps ensure digital products are usable by everyone and reduces costly retrofits later in the development process.

What is the difference between Accessibility Architect vs Accessibility Specialist?

AspectAccessibility ArchitectAccessibility Specialist
