What is an Accelerator Physics job?

An Accelerator Physics job involves the study, design, operation, and improvement of particle accelerators, which are used in scientific research, medicine, and industry. Professionals in this field work on beam dynamics, electromagnetic fields, and advanced technologies to enhance accelerator performance. They may develop new accelerator concepts, troubleshoot operational issues, and collaborate with physicists, engineers, and computational scientists. These roles are found in national laboratories, universities, and private companies specializing in accelerator technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Accelerator Physics position, and why are they important?

To excel in Accelerator Physics, a strong background in physics or engineering, typically at the PhD level, and deep knowledge of particle accelerators are required. Familiarity with simulation software, data acquisition systems, and control systems such as EPICS is crucial, and relevant certifications in radiation safety or laboratory practices may also be necessary. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and the successful execution of complex experiments. These capabilities enable professionals to troubleshoot sophisticated equipment, contribute to scientific innovation, and ensure safe and efficient facility operations.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for an accelerator physicist?

Accelerator physicists are responsible for designing, testing, and optimizing particle accelerators, often collaborating with engineers and technicians to maintain and modify equipment. Their day-to-day tasks may include conducting experiments, analyzing data, running computational simulations, troubleshooting technical issues, and documenting results for research publications. They also participate in project meetings and may contribute to facility upgrades or new accelerator development. The role often requires balancing hands-on work in laboratories with theoretical calculations and computer modeling, fostering a dynamic and intellectually stimulating work environment.

Job description

About us

Acceleron Fusion is developing muoncatalyzed fusion-a path to clean, abundant energy. Building on research sponsored by the U.S. DOE, we have recently raised a $24M Series A venture capital round and have already logged 100+ hours of muon-catalyzed fusion in tests at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Our collaborators include PSI, Oak Ridge, Argonne, Fermilab, and several universities. Join a team where fundamental physics meets application-oriented engineering, and your designs could help move our technology from the laboratory to a commercial energy source.

We have an opening for an Accelerator Physicist who will play a key role in the design and optimization of muon production systems for our fusion technology.

What you'll do:

  • Design and optimize particle accelerator systems and beamlines for muon production
  • Develop simulation models of accelerators and beams to analyze beam dynamics and particle interactions
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to integrate accelerator designs into our fusion system
  • Contribute to experimental planning and data analysis
  • Help establish technical specifications for system components
  • Author technical papers and contribute to the company's scientific publications, presenting research at scientific conferences

What we're looking for:

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, preferably with a focus on accelerator physics
  • Strong understanding of beam dynamics and accelerator systems
  • Demonstrated understanding of accelerator physics principles for beamlines, synchrotrons, and storage rings, including the theory of polarized beams
  • Experience with particle accelerator simulation tools
  • Track record of working successfully with other scientists and engineers to solve complex technical challenges
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced team

Preferred Qualifications (not required)

  • Post-doctoral research experience in accelerator physics
  • Hands-on experience with physics/particle accelerator operations or development
  • Background in muon physics or muon beamline design
  • Familiarity with high-frequency electronics or RF accelerator components.
  • Experience with safety systems for high-power or high-voltage electronics.
  • Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar tools
  • CAD software proficiency (e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD)

Details and Logistics:

  • This is a full-time, onsite role working from our facility in Cambridge, MA.
  • Travel (including international) for several weeks per year is required.
  • Our benefits package includes health & dental insurance, retirement savings with company contribution, stock options, paid time off, and 11 company holidays.
  • The salary range for this role is $110,000 to $150,000. This range represents the minimum and maximum base compensation Acceleron Fusion reasonably expects to pay for this position. The specific salary offered will be determined based on relevant factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location. This position may also be eligible for additional compensation such as bonuses, equity, or other benefits.
