Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD or PsyD from an APA-accredited doctoral program with a specialization in Clinical Psychology, including combined clinical programs (e.g., Clinical/School Psychology).
  • ABD candidates will be considered, but the degree should be expected by the time the position begins. More advanced candidates currently in a tenure-track position can request time awarded towards the tenure clock.
  • By the start of appointment, must be licensed or license-eligible as a Psychologist, Health Service Provider in North Carolina through the NC Psychology Board.
  • Evidence of success or potential for developing significant research, quality publications, and external funding.

Areas of Interest and Preferred Qualifications (No Minimum Level Required)
  • Clinical and/or research experience relevant to children and adolescents, or rural communities.
  • Interest in teaching cognitive assessment.
  • Completion of an APA/CPA-accredited internship.
  • Clinical supervision experience.

Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Psychology has 43 full-time faculty members (33 tenure-track) and serves more than 1,400 undergraduate majors and 90 graduate students across four graduate programs: Psychological Science MA, Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management MA, School Psychology MA/SSP, and Clinical Psychology PsyD. Faculty are afforded the opportunity to teach summer courses for supplementary income and engage in external activities for up to one day per week, which many clinical faculty use for consultation or private practice endeavors. The Department aims to guide and support new junior faculty, specifically by limiting service requirements, minimizing new course preparations and teaching workload in the first year, and ongoing mentoring throughout the tenure process. The department is dedicated to the mission and strategic plan of the university and to creating a nurturing community that welcomes, respects, and supports all constituents. Additional information about the Department of Psychology, the University, and the surrounding area is located on the Psychology website.
The Department proudly offers a Clinical Psychology Psy.D. program that embraces a scholar-practitioner philosophy and a small cohort, mentor match model. We provide assistantship funding to all students for four years. This program is specifically designed to develop empirically-informed clinical psychologists who are prepared to serve as generalists in rural areas. We offer a rigorous program of study and are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based training. The program is currently accredited by APA on contingency, with the application for full accreditation to be submitted in 2026.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The typical teaching load is three courses per semester.
  • Maintain a productive program of research, including publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students' research including foundational projects and dissertations.
  • Seek external funding (e.g., research, workforce development, outreach, student funding).
  • Provide professional service to the program, department, university, community, and discipline.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
