What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ABA Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ABA Intern, you need a basic understanding of behavioral principles, data collection, and a background in psychology or education, often supported by enrollment in a relevant undergraduate or graduate program. Familiarity with ABA therapy software, data tracking tools, and training in safety and crisis prevention is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and attention to detail help interns effectively support clients and collaborate with supervising therapists. These skills ensure accurate implementation of behavior intervention plans and contribute to positive client outcomes.

What are some common challenges ABA Interns face when working with clients, and how can they overcome them?

ABA Interns often encounter challenges such as managing difficult behaviors, building rapport with clients, and adapting to individualized treatment plans. To overcome these, it's important to maintain open communication with your supervising BCBA, seek feedback regularly, and actively participate in team meetings. Emphasizing patience, flexibility, and a willingness to learn can help interns grow professionally while providing effective support to clients. Collaborating closely with other therapists and caregivers also enhances the overall treatment process and helps interns navigate complex cases.

What are ABA Interns?

ABA Interns are students or entry-level professionals who are gaining practical experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a therapy focused on improving specific behaviors in individuals, often those with autism or developmental disorders. They work under the supervision of certified ABA therapists or Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to assist with implementing treatment plans, collecting data, and supporting clients' progress. The internship helps them apply theoretical knowledge, develop hands-on skills, and prepare for certification or future roles in the ABA field.

Job description

Hands-On Experience Supporting Children with Autism in a Clinical Setting

Are you a psychology student looking to gain real-world experience working with children and learning about behavior? Wellspring Learning Centers offers a hands-on internship designed for students interested in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and the work of Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs).

At Wellspring, you'll train in our state-of-the-art ABA centers in Belle Meade and Antioch, where therapy happens in engaging, play-based environments. Our mission is to elevate ABA services through teamwork, professionalism, and meaningful client outcomes.

About the Internship

As an ABA Intern, you'll learn directly from experienced RBTs who provide 1:1 therapy to children with autism and related developmental disabilities. You'll observe and assist with behavior intervention strategies, skill-building activities, and data collection — gaining a realistic understanding of what the ABA field looks like day to day.

This role is perfect for psychology students curious about how behavioral principles apply to motivation, learning, and child development — or for those considering a career as an RBT or future BCBA.

What You'll Do
  • Shadow and assist Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) during sessions

  • Learn how RBTs use ABA techniques to teach communication, play, and daily living skills

  • Observe how data is collected and used to guide treatment decisions

  • Participate in debriefs and team discussions about client progress

  • Gain insight into professional expectations in a clinical therapy setting

Who You Are
  • Currently enrolled in a Psychology, Education, or related field

  • Curious about behavior, learning, and child development

  • Reliable, compassionate, and eager to contribute to a team

  • Comfortable working in active, play-based environments with children

  • Strong communicator with a positive, professional attitude

Program Details
  • Location: Belle Meade or Antioch clinics (in-person only)

  • Schedule: Flexible weekday hours, 10 hours a week

  • Compensation: Unpaid internship with 3 course credit available depending on University, with potential to transition into a paid RBT role after completion

  • Duration: Semester-based or aligned with academic requirements

Why Join Wellspring
  • Learn directly from experienced RBTs and see ABA therapy in action

  • Build hands-on experience in behavioral health and child development

  • Earn priority consideration for RBT employment after the internship

  • Join a professional, team-oriented organization committed to growth and excellence
