Medical Technologist-Reg or Medical Laboratory Technician-Reg

Capitol Clinic Laboratory

Full Time 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)

Hours: 

Monday-Friday: 1:30pm-10:00pm

Occasional weekends

*Evening shift differential for hours worked after 5:30pm

The Medical Technologist (MT) – Registered is responsible for performing laboratory procedures as ordered by a provider. Medical Technologists - Registered work as generalists in the areas of: Chemistry, Hematology and Urinalysis. Responsibilities include performance of lab tests from all Group Health Cooperative of South-Central Wisconsin (GHC-SCW) locations in any or all departments; performance of quality control, troubleshooting, and maintenance functions; collection of specimens; and other tasks as assigned. This position is also responsible for provision of technical support to Medical Laboratory Technicians, providers, and other GHC-SCW internal staff. The MT - Registered works under the general supervision and guidance of the Medical Laboratory Services Manager, Medical Technologist – Chief and/or Medical Technologist – Lead.

The Medical Laboratory Technician position is responsible for performing laboratory procedures as ordered by a practitioner. Work includes performance of lab tests from all GHC-SCW health center sites in any or all departments; performance of quality control, troubleshooting, and maintenance functions; collection of specimens; and other tasks as assigned.  The MLT works under the general supervision and guidance of the Laboratory Manager, Chief Medical Technologist and/or Medical Technologist - Lead.

Job Specific Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology, Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science or related science is required.
  2. Valid certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Technologist (AMT) or valid certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Technologist in Microbiology (ASCP),  with certification as a Medical Lab Technician (ASCP) or valid certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Technologist in Chemistry (ASCP),  with certification as a Medical Lab Technician (ASCP) or valid certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Technologist in Hematology (ASCP),  with certification as a Medical Lab Technician (ASCP).
  3. Possession of or eligibility for a valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certificate is required.  Employee must obtain certification within four (4) months of employment.  
  4. Knowledge of current laboratory safety and hygiene protocols.
  5. Knowledge and ability to accurately perform tests.
  6. Knowledge of quality control testing procedures and practices.
  7. Ability to perform troubleshooting on laboratory equipment. 
  8. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  10. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to be culturally sensitive and work with a diverse patient population.
  11. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn and use computer-based applications such as MS Office, electronic medical record systems and laboratory related applications. Experience with EPIC is desirable. 
  12. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Knowledge of or ability to learn HIPAA requirements.
  13. Knowledge of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) of 1988 and requirements to keep GHC-SCW laboratories in compliance is required.
  14. Ability to be on-call every other week to provide support to laboratory operations is required. Ability to provide own transportation to various work locations is required.
