911 Engineer information

What is a 911 engineer?

911 Engineers are professionals who design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot the technical systems used in emergency response centers, such as 911 call centers. They ensure that communication networks, software, and hardware supporting emergency calls are reliable and up-to-date. Their role is critical in making sure that emergency calls are received and dispatched without delay or technical errors. 911 Engineers often collaborate with public safety officials, IT specialists, and vendors to optimize and secure these vital systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 911 engineer?

To thrive as a 911 Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications, networking, and emergency services technology, often supported by a degree in engineering or related field. Familiarity with Next Generation 911 (NG911) systems, CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch) software, and relevant certifications such as NENA or APCO are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for addressing technical challenges and collaborating with public safety officials. These skills ensure reliable emergency response systems and the safety of communities relying on rapid and accurate dispatch services.

What are some common challenges 911 engineers face when maintaining emergency communication systems?

911 Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring system reliability during high call volumes, staying current with evolving technologies, and coordinating with multiple agencies for seamless integration of communication networks. Additionally, they must respond promptly to technical issues, sometimes outside regular hours, to minimize downtime. This role also requires navigating strict regulatory standards and handling sensitive information with discretion.

What is the difference between 911 Engineer vs Network Engineer?

Aspect911 EngineerNetwork Engineer
CertificationsFCC, NENA certifications, Emergency Communications certificationsCCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentEmergency call centers, public safety agenciesCorporate offices, data centers, IT departments
Industry UsagePublic safety, emergency responseIT, telecommunications, networking

While both 911 Engineers and Network Engineers work with communication systems, 911 Engineers focus on designing and maintaining emergency call systems for public safety agencies, requiring specialized certifications. Network Engineers primarily manage and troubleshoot data networks within organizations. The roles differ mainly in their environment and specific technical focus, though both require strong networking knowledge.

At Axon, we're on a mission to Protect Life. We're explorers, pursuing society's most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.

Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you'll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.

What we do

Axon 911 brings together Prepared and Carbyne under Axon. Together, we are creating the only platform that combines modern 911 infrastructure with an AI intelligence layer-helping public safety agencies move faster, make better decisions, and deliver better outcomes in the moments that matter most.

911 is the backbone of public safety, yet the professionals behind it have long been held back by outdated technology. Axon 911 is here to change that. Joining this team means more than taking a job-it means helping shape the future of emergency response and building a safer, more connected world.

Your Impact
  • Lead network projects, including network establishment, upgrades, expansions, and migrations.
  • Configure and maintain Fortinet Firewalls, Cisco switches, and routers, among other networking equipment and ensure network security by implementing best practices and conducting regular security audits.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot any issues that arise, ensuring maximum uptime and reliability and perform production system upgrades, as well as debug sessions independently in a mission-critical live system.
  • Thrive in a high-activity/fast-paced environment, effectively managing multiple tasks and shifting priorities and resolve complex problems independently, leveraging data analytics and troubleshooting skills.
  • Collaborate with vendors and service providers to build and resolve network-related challenges.
  • Perform network infrastructure deployments leveraging IaC tools and pipelines
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior network engineers.
What You'll Do

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Network Engineer to join our Global Operations team. As a Senior Network Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the designing, integration, and implementation process of our innovative public safety products for our clients in the national first responders systems (911) and government sectors worldwide. Youwill be responsible for ensuring the highest level of service is delivered to our customers 24/7.

    • Terraform Expertise: Proven ability to design and provision AWS environments using Terraform/Terragrunt, integrated with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub, GitHub Actions)
    • AWS Cloud Design: Deep expertise in AWS VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, ALB/NLB, Ingress/Egress architectures, and Route 53
    • SD-WAN Design: Strong background in SD-WAN architecture, including orchestrators, firewalls, routers, and switches
  • Hard Skills
    • Strong command of core networking protocols and technologies, including TCP/IP, VLANs, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VPN, and DNS
    • Proven ability to independently debug production systems and perform deep-level packet capture analysis in mission-critical environments
    • In‑depth experience planning, designing, implementing, and operating enterprise IT networks and data center network environments
    • Solid understanding of network security principles and best practices
    • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting private and public transport connectivity, with strong ability to identify issues impacting production systems
    • Hands‑on experience with Git and DevOps tooling, including Visual Studio Code, Bitbucket, Jenkins, GitLab, or equivalent platforms
    • Experience with network monitoring and optimization tools, with the ability to quickly diagnose issues affecting voice and video quality
  • Soft Skills
    • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, high‑activity environment, comfortably managing ambiguity and shifting priorities
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across cross‑functional teams and translate technical concepts for non‑technical stakeholders
