What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 5G RF Optimization Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 5G RF Optimization Engineer, you need a solid background in wireless communications, RF engineering principles, and a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in RF planning tools, drive test equipment, and knowledge of system optimization platforms such as TEMS, Atoll, or Actix, along with relevant certifications like CCNA or 5G-specific credentials, are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and resolve network issues efficiently. These competencies are crucial for ensuring optimal network performance, customer satisfaction, and successful deployment of advanced 5G technologies.

What does a 5G RF Optimization Engineer do?

A 5G RF Optimization Engineer is responsible for ensuring optimal performance of 5G wireless networks by analyzing and improving radio frequency (RF) parameters. They use specialized tools to monitor network quality, identify coverage gaps, and resolve issues related to signal strength, interference, and data throughput. Their work involves tuning network equipment, conducting drive tests, and collaborating with other engineers to implement solutions that enhance user experience and network efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by a 5G RF Optimization Engineer when deploying new sites, and how are they typically addressed?

A 5G RF Optimization Engineer often encounters challenges such as interference management, handover optimization, and ensuring consistent coverage in dense urban environments during new site deployments. These challenges are typically addressed through detailed drive testing, network parameter tuning, and close collaboration with network planners and field teams. Engineers also utilize advanced software tools to analyze performance metrics and implement solutions like antenna tilt adjustments, frequency planning, and power optimization to enhance network quality.

What is the difference between 5G Rf Optimization Engineer vs RF Network Engineer?

Aspect5G Rf Optimization EngineerRF Network Engineer
Primary FocusOptimizing 5G radio frequency performance and coverageDesigning, deploying, and maintaining RF networks
CertificationsRF, wireless, or telecom certifications, often including 5G-specific trainingSimilar certifications, with emphasis on RF and network design
Work EnvironmentField testing, site surveys, and network optimization in telecom companiesNetwork planning, deployment, and troubleshooting in telecom or service providers

The 5G Rf Optimization Engineer specializes in fine-tuning 5G radio networks to ensure optimal performance, coverage, and capacity. In contrast, the RF Network Engineer focuses on designing and maintaining RF networks, including 4G and 5G, across various stages. Both roles require similar certifications and often work within the same industry environments, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Job description

Your Impact

We are developing the next generation of mission-critical communications systems to builds mission-critical devices used by public-safety professionals worldwide. As a Staff Wireless Software Engineer, you will be a technical leader driving architecture and implementation of wireless protocol stacks, transport abstraction layers, and real-time communication systems across our devices. You will operate at the intersection of RF, embedded systems, and cloud-connected software.

This is a hands-on technical role with broad architectural influence.

Work Location: This role is eligible to be based out of Axon's US hubs in Atlanta, Boston, Scottsdale (HQ), San Francisco, or Seattle, and follows a hybrid schedule. We rely on in-person collaboration and ask that team members work onsite 4 days per week, Tuesdays through Fridays, with the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays, unless there is an approved workplace accommodation. We believe that connection fuels innovation, and our in-office culture is designed to foster meaningful teamwork, mentorship, and shared success.

Reports to: VP of Software Engineering
Direct Reports: 0

What You'll Do:

You will be tasked with solving the toughest wireless problems our products face: translating research into resilient, high-performance PHY/MAC systems; architecting firmware and toolchains that meet extreme latency, power, and reliability targets; and defining the wireless roadmap that balances innovation, manufacturability, and real-world performance. You will shape how our devices connect and perform at scale - from lab prototypes to deployed fleets - and your work will be judged by field performance under real conditions, not just simulations. This mission-critical wireless systems require both RF understanding and deep systems software expertise. This position sits at that boundary and defines the reliability and trust of the entire communications platform..

  • Lead design and implementation of wireless communication stacks (LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, sidelink, mesh, P2P, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC....)
  • Architect low-latency, high-reliability PTT and real-time voice transport systems
  • Develop transport abstraction layers across multiple radios and networks
  • Optimize performance (latency, jitter, packet loss, handover behavior)
  • Collaborate with RF, hardware, and firmware teams to ensure end-to-end system performance
  • Drive modem integration (e.g., Qualcomm, MediaTek) and carrier certification efforts
  • Implement QoS, prioritization, and congestion control mechanisms
  • Contribute to secure communication layers (encryption, key management, secure boot integration)
  • Define metrics and instrumentation for wireless performance at scale
  • Mentor engineers and set technical direction across projects
What You Bring
  • 10+ years experience in wireless software development
  • Strong C/C++ experience in embedded or systems environments
  • Deep understanding of wireless protocols (LTE, 5G NR, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sidelink, or mesh)
  • Experience working with modem vendors (e.g., Qualcomm SDKs)
  • Experience with real-time systems and low-latency audio transport
  • Strong networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, UDP, RTP, QUIC, QoS)
  • Familiarity with RF performance constraints (RSSI, SINR, handovers, link budgets)
  • Experience debugging packet-level and radio-layer issues
Additional preferable skills:
  • Experience with mission-critical communications (LMR, MCPTT, public safety)
  • Experience with 3GPP standards (Rel 16+)
  • Experience with 5G sidelink (PC5) or device-to-device protocols
  • Experience implementing mesh or MANET routing
  • Knowledge of secure communications (AES, TLS, PKI, FIPS environments)
  • Familiarity with Android/Linux device platforms
  • Experience with satellite backhaul or hybrid transport systems
Benefits that Benefit You
  • Competitive salary and 401k with employer match
  • Discretionary paid time off
  • Paid parental leave for all
  • Medical, Dental, Vision plans
  • Fitness Programs
  • Emotional & Mental Wellness support
  • Learning & Development programs
  • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)
  • And yes, we have snacks in our offices

Benefits listed herein may vary depending on the nature of your employment and the location where you work.
