What is a 440 agent?

A 440 agent, also known as a Customer Representative, is a licensed insurance professional in Florida authorized to transact insurance under the supervision of a general lines agent. The 440 license allows individuals to assist customers with insurance policies, provide quotes, explain coverage options, and handle routine policy changes, but not to sell insurance independently. This role is commonly found in insurance agencies, where 440 agents support the sales and service process for personal and commercial insurance lines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 440 agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 440 Agent (Customer Representative) in insurance, you need a solid understanding of insurance products, risk assessment, and Florida state licensing as a 4-40 Customer Representative. Familiarity with agency management systems, quoting software, and customer relationship management (CRM) tools is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to build trust with clients set top-performing agents apart. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate policy handling, regulatory compliance, and excellent customer service in a competitive insurance market.

What are some common challenges faced by 440 agents when handling multiple client accounts simultaneously?

440 Agents, who are licensed to sell property and casualty insurance in Florida, often manage a high volume of client accounts with diverse insurance needs. Balancing timely customer service, accurate policy management, and compliance with state regulations can be challenging, especially during peak renewal periods or after natural disasters. Effective organization, strong communication skills, and proficiency with agency management software are essential to ensure clients receive prompt and accurate service. Regular training and collaboration with underwriters and claims adjusters also help agents stay updated and efficiently resolve issues.

Job description

About Us

Paradigm Insurance Agency is a locally owned, independent insurance agency serving individuals, families, and businesses throughout the Rochester, NY region. We provide customized insurance solutions designed to protect our clients' homes, vehicles, businesses, and assets while delivering the personalized service that only an independent agency can offer.

We're a stable, family-oriented agency with a strong reputation, established community relationships, and an ambitious vision for growth. Our mission is simple: help clients protect what matters most while building lasting relationships based on trust, expertise, and exceptional service.

The Opportunity

Paradigm Insurance Agency is seeking a licensed Insurance Agent to manage and grow both personal and commercial insurance business while helping drive the next phase of the agency's growth.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an insurance professional who understands the business, values relationships, and wants to be part of an organization that has already built the infrastructure necessary for success.

Unlike many agencies where producers are expected to generate business entirely on their own, Paradigm has invested heavily in creating strategic referral partnerships, operational systems, marketing initiatives, and support resources that consistently generate opportunities for growth.

Our agency maintains established relationships with real estate professionals, mortgage lenders, business owners, and community partners throughout the Rochester region. These partnerships create ongoing opportunities to assist homeowners, families, and business owners with their insurance needs while developing long-term client relationships.
The successful candidate will be someone who can cultivate and strengthen these relationships while developing new partnerships of their own. This role requires someone who enjoys working directly with clients and business professionals, understands the value of relationship-based selling, and can serve as a trusted advisor rather than simply a salesperson.

Most importantly, you will not be expected to build everything from scratch. Our operations, administrative support, systems, processes, and lead-generation efforts are already in place. You'll have the resources and support necessary to focus on what you do best: advising clients, building relationships, writing business, and growing your book.
We're looking for a professional who is motivated, competent, and ready to take advantage of the opportunities already being created within our organization.
For the right individual, this position offers significant opportunities for increased earnings, professional development, leadership responsibilities, and long-term career growth as the agency continues to expand.

Key Responsibilities

Advise, Quote & Write Business

  • Assess client needs and recommend appropriate insurance solutions
  • Prepare and present competitive proposals for personal and commercial insurance clients
  • Explain coverage options clearly and professionally
  • Write new business and identify opportunities to round out accounts through cross-selling and bundling
  • Build trust and long-term relationships with clients

Manage & Service Existing Business

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients
  • Handle policy changes, endorsements, billing inquiries, and coverage questions
  • Assist clients throughout the policy lifecycle with professionalism and responsiveness
  • Deliver an exceptional client experience that drives retention and referrals

Retain & Grow Accounts

  • Conduct proactive policy reviews
  • Identify coverage gaps and opportunities for account development
  • Maintain strong retention while expanding client relationships
  • Develop referral opportunities from existing clients and professional partners

Build Professional Relationships

  • Strengthen existing relationships with referral partners and community professionals
  • Develop new business relationships that support agency growth
  • Represent the agency with professionalism and integrity throughout the community

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Active New York Property & Casualty (P&C) License
  • Ability to manage personal and commercial insurance accounts
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Professional, organized, and detail-oriented work habits
  • A genuine desire to help clients protect their assets and achieve peace of mind

Preferred

  • Prior experience in personal and/or commercial insurance sales and service
  • Existing business development or networking experience
  • Life & Health License (or willingness to obtain)

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who understands insurance, values relationships, takes ownership of their work, and wants to contribute to a growing organization where their efforts make a meaningful impact.

Why Join Paradigm Insurance Agency?

Established Opportunities

  • Existing referral relationships generating ongoing opportunities
  • Strong connections within the real estate, mortgage, and business communities
  • Proven systems and processes already in place

Support & Resources

  • Administrative and operational support
  • Established workflows and infrastructure
  • Collaborative team environment
  • Leadership that is invested in your success

Growth Potential

  • Competitive base salary plus uncapped commission opportunities
  • Ongoing earning potential through account growth and retention
  • Professional development and advancement opportunities
  • Leadership potential as the agency continues to expand

This is more than just an insurance sales position. It's an opportunity to build a rewarding career with an agency that is actively investing in growth and committed to helping its team members succeed.

Compensation Includes:

  • Competitive base salary
  • Uncapped commission opportunities
  • Ongoing renewal income opportunities
  • Additional earning potential based on performance and growth

Benefits:

  • 401(k)
  • Health Insurance
