What are 3D Interns?

3D Interns are entry-level professionals or students who assist in creating three-dimensional models, animations, or visual effects, typically within industries such as gaming, film, architecture, or product design. They work under the guidance of experienced 3D artists or designers and gain hands-on experience using software like Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max. Their responsibilities often include modeling, texturing, rendering, or assisting with project workflows. The internship provides valuable insights into the 3D industry and helps interns build a professional portfolio.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Intern, you typically need a solid grasp of 3D modeling, animation principles, and a relevant educational background or coursework in digital arts or design. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Blender, Autodesk Maya, or 3ds Max, and possibly basic knowledge of rendering engines, is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members are important soft skills. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to creative projects, adapt quickly to workflow requirements, and grow within the 3D industry.

What types of projects and software can a 3D Intern expect to work with during their internship?

As a 3D Intern, you will typically assist with a variety of projects such as modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering assets for games, animations, or architectural visualizations, depending on the industry. Most internships expose you to industry-standard software like Autodesk Maya, Blender, 3ds Max, or ZBrush. You'll collaborate closely with senior artists and designers, often participating in team meetings to review progress and receive feedback. This hands-on experience helps build your portfolio and develop essential skills for a future career in 3D art or design.

Do you want to change how the world creates?
At Formlabs, we're building the tools that make it possible for anyone to bring their ideas to life, from cutting-edge products to life-saving medical devices. Our 3D printing technology powers innovation at more than 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. The Hardware Reliability Engineering team ensures that Formlabs products in development are reliable and ready to ship, as well as triaging reliability issues of current products already in the field. We work closely with design teams of all disciplines to find product flaws as fast as possible and then work on redesigns to make more robust systems.
Are you a cross-functional engineer that is passionate about creating robust products? We want you as a Hardware Test Engineering Intern.

  • Perform hands-on and data-driven root cause analysis to triage field failures and electromechanical systems, utilizing common problem-solving methodologies and a "physics of failure" approach.
  • Design, build, and implement automated testing equipment for subsystem characterization and reliability/environmental testing
  • Collaborate with the design team throughout product development to perform risk assessments, manage continuous testing, and contribute to design reviews

You
  • Are well versed with complex electromechanical systems and are passionate about understanding what it takes to make them work reliably
  • Have experience developing full system test plans and know how to execute them in fast-paced product development timelines
  • Have experience with testing a wide range of sensors, actuators, and mechanical components
  • Can prototype and run your own tests, from experimental setup to hardware and software implementation

Bonus skills:
  • Familiarity with Linux systems and scripting in various languages (Python preferred)

  • Cohort-based social and professional development experience for interns
  • Many opt-in culture events across our diverse community
  • And of course... unlimited 3D prints

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
