How does a 3D Apparel Designer typically collaborate with pattern makers and product developers during the garment creation process?

A 3D Apparel Designer works closely with pattern makers and product developers to ensure digital garment prototypes accurately translate into physical samples. Collaboration often involves sharing 3D models, reviewing fit simulations, and making real-time adjustments based on feedback from the product team. Regular meetings and digital review sessions help align design intent, technical feasibility, and production requirements. This collaborative approach streamlines the development process, reduces the number of physical samples needed, and helps bring products to market more efficiently.

What is 3D apparel?

3D apparel refers to clothing and fashion items that are designed, visualized, and sometimes manufactured using three-dimensional (3D) digital technology. This process allows designers to create virtual prototypes of garments, visualize fit and style on digital models, and make adjustments before physical production. 3D apparel is widely used in the fashion industry to speed up design cycles, reduce waste, and improve collaboration. It also enables virtual try-ons and can be integrated into e-commerce for enhanced customer experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Apparel Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Apparel Designer, you need expertise in fashion design, garment construction, and digital pattern making, often supported by a degree in fashion or textile design. Proficiency in specialized 3D software such as CLO 3D, Browzwear, or Adobe Creative Suite is typically required, along with familiarity with digital asset management systems. Strong creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help designers translate concepts into virtual prototypes and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These abilities are essential for accelerating product development, improving design accuracy, and meeting the evolving demands of the fashion industry.

The thriving partnerships we have established worldwide help us ensure the efficient production and expedited delivery of our product, and the impeccable quality and competitive pricing of our merchandise make us a top choice and reliable partner for leading retailers across the globe.

We are seeking a Senior CAD & 3D Illustrator to lead the execution of high-quality, production-accurate digital product visuals used in buyer presentations and internal development. The ideal candidate is forward thinking and passionate about creating high-quality design visuals. This role requires strong expertise in Photoshop and Illustrator, along with a curiosity and openness to exploring 3D and other emerging design technologies, including AI-driven platforms that can enhance and evolve our creative workflow.

Please be able to execute on these essential responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor more junior CAD Artists by managing workload distribution, reviewing output, and elevating overall quality standards.
  • Create detailed, production-accurate digital flats and garment renderings using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Digitally render fabrics, lace, trims, and construction details with realism and precision.
  • Partner closely with Design to translate concepts into retail-ready presentation materials.
  • Ensure all visuals accurately reflect garment construction, fit intent, fabrication, and brand positioning.
  • Ability to oversee and manage departmental projects, ensuring deadlines are met and priorities are clearly communicated.
  • Review and approve work completed by more junior CAD Artists to ensure consistency, accuracy, and brand alignment.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to enhance workflow efficiencies, including exploration of 3D tools and AI-supported design technologies.
  • Contribute to the evolution of Dreamwearโ€™s digital visualization capabilities.

Job Requirements & Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of experience in apparel digital design, technical flats, or product visualization.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (significant execution in Photoshop)
  • Strong understanding of garment construction, fabric behavior, trims, and apparel development processes.
  • Experience with CLO3D or other 3D apparel visualization tools is preferred, but not required
  • Ability to balance speed and precision in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Keen eye for color & proportion; must be self-directed, detail-oriented, and comfortable providing constructive feedback.

Please provide a portfolio or examples of work with your resume. Be sure that it includes demonstration of some or all of the below:

  • Technical flats
  • Colorway execution
  • Garment renderings
  • Fabric/lace texture rendering
  • 3D apparel visualization (if applicable)
  • Buyer presentation boards or line sheets
