Overview
The Inventory Support Specialist is responsible for providing timely and effective inventory management for the Pharmacy. Foremost among these responsibilities are managing the pharmaceutical and supplies inventory for the department through sound inventory practices, solving practical problems, resolving conflict and implementing constructive change.

Responsibilities
Inventory Management
  • Orders pharmaceuticals, IV fluids and supplies from outside vendors.
  • Receives and assists with shelving orders upon arrival.
  • Aim to assure uninterrupted supply of pharmaceuticals through alternate source/supplier purchases and proactive communication with suppliers, manufactures and shippers and pharmacy leadership. In the event all avenues are exhausted works with Pharmacy Leadership to develop a drug shortage action plan with hospital Medical Executive Committee.
  • Under the direction of the manager, assists with processing of drug recalls, record filing and storage.
  • Processes contracted hospital orders and maintains related records.
  • Supports and adheres to departmental compliance with regard to contractual purchasing obligations and 340B Program federal regulations.
  • Monitors and adjusts on - hand inventory levels to meet changes in usage pattern, and seasonal variations
  • Approves invoices from suppliers.
  • Returns or destroys outdated or unusable pharmaceuticals according to department procedures.
  • Facilitates the procurement of "special order" and / or emergency medications and supplies.
  • Interacts with customers, including patients, vendors, and other hospital personnel, with a pleasant and professional manner and appearance.

Operational
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer programs used to order pharmaceuticals, office and departmental supplies.
  • Maintains computer drug files as assigned.
  • Under the direction of pharmacy management, coordinates the annual physical inventory of the pharmacy.
  • Assists with the budgeting process through review of financial data, reporting variances and identifying trends.
  • Generates and shares third party wholesaler data to system
  • Works in consultation with department management to assure that services are consistent with the needs of the medical staff.
  • Participate in local and system level committees
  • Assists with the orientation of new hires, pharmacy interns and pharmacy students.

Qualifications
  • High School graduate or certified equivalency (GED) is required
  • Must maintain current registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician.
  • Must demonstrate an aptitude and interest in inventory management.
  • Prior experience as a pharmacy technician or in materials management is desirable.
  • Three to five years' experience directly related to pharmacy operations is preferred.
  • Must possess excellent communications skills. Must read, write, and speak fluent English.
