What is a 135 pilot?

A 135 Pilot is a professional pilot who operates aircraft under Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 135, which governs commercial, non-scheduled air charter and commuter operations. These pilots typically fly smaller aircraft for companies that provide charter flights, air taxi services, cargo transportation, or medical evacuation. Unlike airline pilots operating under Part 121, 135 Pilots often have more varied schedules and routes, and they may fly to airports not served by major airlines. To become a 135 Pilot, individuals must meet specific flight experience requirements and pass rigorous training and testing mandated by the FAA.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 135 pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 135 Pilot, you need a commercial pilot certificate, instrument rating, and significant flight hours, along with a strong understanding of FAA Part 135 regulations. Familiarity with flight planning software, advanced avionics, and navigation systems is typically required. Excellent decision-making, communication, and situational awareness distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring passenger safety, regulatory compliance, and efficient operations in charter and on-demand flight environments.

What are some common challenges faced by 135 pilots when flying for charter operators, and how can they prepare for them?

135 Pilots working for charter operators often encounter challenges such as irregular schedules, rapid changes in flight plans, and the need to operate into a wide variety of airports, including those with minimal services or unfamiliar procedures. Effective time management and strong communication skills are essential to adapt quickly to last-minute trips and client requests. Pilots can prepare by staying current on regulations, maintaining flexibility, and proactively familiarizing themselves with various destinations and company standard operating procedures. Collaboration with dispatchers, maintenance crews, and other pilots is also crucial to ensure safe and efficient operations.

What is the difference between 135 Pilot vs 135 Flight Instructor?

Aspect135 Pilot135 Flight Instructor

Work EnvironmentOperate aircraft for passenger or cargo transport under Part 135Provide flight training and instruction under Part 135

While both 135 Pilots and 135 Flight Instructors hold similar certifications and work within Part 135 operations, 135 Pilots primarily operate aircraft for transport services, whereas 135 Flight Instructors focus on training pilots. The roles differ mainly in their responsibilities and daily tasks, but both require similar licensing and work in the same industry environment.

How much do 135 pilots make?

135 pilots, typically operating under Part 135 regulations, earn an average annual salary ranging from $50,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, aircraft type, and flight hours. Salaries can increase with seniority, additional certifications, and flying more complex aircraft or longer routes.
