What is a 1099 medical device sales representative?

A 1099 Medical Device Sales Representative is an independent contractor who sells medical devices to healthcare professionals and organizations. Unlike traditional employees (W-2), 1099 reps are self-employed and typically work on commission, managing their own schedule and business expenses. They are responsible for building client relationships, demonstrating products, and meeting sales targets. This role offers flexibility and earning potential but requires strong sales skills, self-motivation, and knowledge of medical devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 1099 medical device sales representative?

To thrive as a 1099 Medical Device Sales Representative, you need strong sales acumen, deep knowledge of medical devices, and often a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with CRM systems, sales tracking software, and an understanding of healthcare compliance (such as HIPAA) are commonly required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and resilience help build relationships with healthcare professionals and succeed in a commission-driven, independent role. These abilities are essential for generating sales, maintaining compliance, and growing your portfolio in a highly competitive, regulated market.

What are some common challenges faced by 1099 medical device sales representatives and how can they be addressed?

As a 1099 Medical Device Sales Representative, one of the main challenges is managing the unpredictability of income, since earnings are often commission-based without a guaranteed salary. Additionally, representatives are responsible for their own business expenses, benefits, and taxes, which requires strong financial planning. Building and maintaining relationships with healthcare providers can be demanding, as it involves constant networking, product demonstrations, and staying updated on compliance regulations. To succeed, it's crucial to develop effective time management skills, invest in ongoing industry education, and leverage a strong professional network for support and lead generation.

A 1099 medical device sales representative's income varies widely based on commissions, sales performance, and experience. If you're motivated by building relationships, winning new business, and creating long-term growth, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while maximizing your earning potential.

  • Sell both capital equipment and disposable surgical products.

  • Conduct clinical product demonstrations and evaluations.

  • Execute strategic territory growth plans.

  • Maintain an active sales pipeline and CRM documentation.

  • Represent the company at conferences, educational programs, and industry events.

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of medical device sales experience within surgical or operating room environments.

  • Proven success selling into hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.

  • Experience calling directly on surgeons.

  • Experience selling capital equipment, disposable medical devices, or both.

  • Strong business development and prospecting skills.

  • Demonstrated history of exceeding sales quotas.

  • General surgery products

  • Vascular products

  • Plastic surgery devices

  • Energy devices

  • Colorectal surgery technologies

Experience launching new products or growing underdeveloped territories is highly valued.

You'll Excel Here If You...
  • Enjoy hunting for new business opportunities.

  • Thrive in the operating room environment.

  • Build credibility quickly with surgeons and hospital leadership.

  • Prefer autonomy and ownership over micromanagement.

  • Take pride in growing your territory like your own business.

  • Are competitive, organized, and highly self-motivated.

  • Enjoy selling clinically complex solutions that improve patient care.

Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to join a respected surgical medical device company with an established reputation while taking ownership of a territory with substantial growth potential.
