Job description

Job Description SUMMARY We are looking for a hands-on Senior Infrastructure Engineer to support, maintain, and modernize a core IT infrastructure environment. This role is ideal for someone with strong virtualization, Windows Server, storage, backup, and systems administration experience who can contribute quickly in a production environment. The primary focus of this position will be supporting infrastructure modernization efforts, including a migration from VMware to Proxmox.

Direct Proxmox experience is preferred, but strong virtualization fundamentals and the ability to learn new platforms quickly are most important. This person should be comfortable working across servers, storage, backups, monitoring, documentation, and change management. The ideal candidate is more than a maintenance-focused systems administrator.

They should be curious, self-directed, and interested in improving the environment through better processes, automation, monitoring, documentation, and emerging tools such as Microsoft Copilot or AI-assisted IT operations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Support the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and improvement of server, storage, virtualization, and monitoring infrastructure. Assist with virtualization modernization efforts, including migration work from VMware to Proxmox.

Administer and troubleshoot Windows Server environments. Support Linux-based systems and infrastructure platforms as needed. Assist with VM migration, host migration, backup testing, and production readiness activities.

Support backup and recovery platforms, including enterprise backup tools and related testing. Maintain and improve monitoring and alerting platforms for infrastructure visibility. Assist with server patching, upgrades, change management, and after-hours maintenance windows.

Support storage, compute, and basic networking infrastructure. Assist with Microsoft Azure, Active Directory, Entra ID, and hybrid Microsoft infrastructure initiatives. Create and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and project notes.

Identify opportunities to improve IT operations through scripting, automation, AI tools, or Microsoft Copilot-related capabilities. Work closely with technical leadership and team members to support infrastructure projects and production systems. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 5+ years of infrastructure, systems engineering, or related IT experience.

Strong experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware, Proxmox, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, or KVM. Strong Windows Server administration experience. Working knowledge of Linux administration and troubleshooting.

Experience with storage technologies such as SAN, NAS, iSCSI, or similar platforms. Experience with backup and recovery tools such as Veeam or comparable enterprise backup platforms. Experience supporting production infrastructure environments.

Familiarity with monitoring and alerting tools such as SolarWinds, LibreNMS, PRTG, Nagios, Zabbix, Grafana, or similar. Basic networking knowledge, including VLANs, VPNs, routing concepts, and connectivity troubleshooting. Exposure to Microsoft Azure, Active Directory, Entra ID, or hybrid Microsoft environments.

Ability to support approved after-hours maintenance windows when needed. Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and collaboration skills. Interest in learning new technologies and improving infrastructure operations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience migrating workloads from VMware to another virtualization platform. Experience with server upgrade projects. Experience with AD modernization, Entra ID, SharePoint, Azure Files, or Microsoft 365 infrastructure.

PowerShell, Python, or other scripting/automation experience. Experience using AI tools, Microsoft Copilot, or automation to improve IT operations, documentation, monitoring, or workflows. Experience building, testing, and supporting production-ready infrastructure.

Demonstrated curiosity through self-learning, home lab work, side projects, certifications, or hands-on experimentation with new technologies.
