Job Summary

The Senior Civil Project Engineer will provide technical leadership to project teams working on the planning, evaluation, design, and implementation of civil engineering projects. The successful candidate will lead the study phase and/or design phase of projects related to the civil, environmental, and construction fields. The Senior Civil Project Engineer will regularly interact with employees outside their department, occasionally interact with clients, regularly interact with the public (agencies, government entities, etc.), and rarely participate in selling to clients. The senior civil project engineer is expected to manage assigned employees, while being an example of professional presence, representing the Company and the department in a positive light, and have expert knowledge at least two (2) engineering software packages. An Ohio Professional Engineering license is required for this role. The Senior Civil Project Engineer is expected to seal engineer reports and construction drawings as the Engineer-of-Record.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Consults with and guides project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs, and modifications.
  • Uses design software and drawing tools to accurately render and communicate designs; plans and designs other necessary improvements related to the type of project assigned.
  • Sets design specifications by determining appropriate engineering requirements (e.g. water flow rates, traffic demand, earthwork balance).
  • Plans projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data.
  • Drafts and presents reports on topics related to projects such as detention reports and engineering due diligence reports.
  • Performs calculations for materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine probable construction cost.
  • Collaborates with architects, contractors, and other engineers to ensure projects progress properly.
  • Collaborates with surveyors (or directs and participates in surveying) to establish reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors that will affect construction.
  • Monitors project progress and ensures design specifications and standards are met.
  • Leads design from inception through construction and is responsible for engineering reports and construction drawings produced as the Engineer-of-Record.
  • Able and willing to review other projects for QA/QC and stamp projects as appropriate.
  • Ability to complete complex assigned projects independently as assigned with minimal oversight beyond initial handoff.
  • Ability to teach and explain to others the methodologies used by the company.
  • Advanced level of understanding of design tools and civil engineering practices.
  • Engineer of Record for projects in Ohio.
  • Develop, mentor, train, evaluate, coach/discipline, acknowledge, and thank assigned staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Executes advanced design projects from start to finish as the primary designer of the project.
  • Assigns Co-Ops, Graduate Civil Engineers, and Associate Civil Engineers projects/pieces of projects aligned with their abilities.
  • Proactively implements regulatory requirements based on knowledge of state and local regulations

Qualifications, Education, & Experience

  • Civil Engineering Degree (or related)
  • Minimum 8 consecutive years of Civil Engineering experience
  • Public speaking ability, desired

  • Proficient in computer-assisted design (CAD) and other design, data recording, and analysis software.

  • Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.
